At Eternity's Gate

At Eternity’s Gate is the new film by Julian Schnabel on Van Gogh, which premiered last week at the Venice film festival. The film stars William Defoe as Van Gogh and focuses on Gogh’s final years in France. What makes this film different to others is that this is directed by an artist. As Schnabel says, “the only way to describe a work of art is to make a work of art”. The film is sure to take a different look at Gogh’s final years and the circumstances surrounding his death. Although common consensus is that Gogh committed suicide, this film explores the theory that he was shot.

“Yet what we have is a strong, valuable and intelligent performance from Dafoe, capably captured by Schnabel.” – The Guardian

At Eternity’s Gate takes its name from the famous work by Van Gough.
