The largest surviving portion of the first major collection of Classical antiquities in Britain – the sculptures and inscriptions collected in the early 17th century by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel for his London house and garden – is in the Antiquities Department of the Ashmolean Museum. This handbook tracks their eventful history before they came to rest in Oxford.

About the Author

Michael Vickers is Professor of Archaeology in the University of Oxford, Senior Research Fellow in Classical Studies at Jesus College, Oxford, curator of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum and co-director of the Oxford-Batumi Archaeological Expedition to Pichvnari, Georgia. His previous publications include 'Artful Crafts: Ancient Greek Silverware and Pottery', 'Images on Textiles: the Weave of Fifth-Century Athenian Art and Society', 'Ancient Greek Pottery' and 'Scythian and Thracian Antiquities'.
