Roy Oxlade (1929 – 2014) played a critical role in the history of 20th century British art, believing art should ‘transform the mundane’, shifting life ‘up a gear’ and revealing the extraordinary within ordinary objects. Oxlade’s paintings are inextricably entwined with his home and studio in Kent. Articulated by recurrent motifs – scissors, jugs, lemons, lamps – selected for their aesthetic and functional qualities, domesticity and ritual are central to his oeuvre. Oxlade’s wife, fellow painter Rose Wylie, appears regularly in his pictures in her role as his lifelong muse.<\/p>\n
This book is the first major monograph on Oxlade’s paintings. It features a previously unpublished 1994 interview with Oxlade by Andrew Lambirth, essays by Jennifer Higgie and Barry Schwabsky, and an interview with Rose Wylie by Harry Thorne.
