To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death, the musée des impressionnismes Giverny invited Daniel Buren (b. 1938) – one of France’s most internationally celebrated living artists, awarded the Golden Lion at the 1986 Venice Biennale and the 2007 Praemium Imperiale – to create an exhibition across the whole museum grounds. Known for his signature 8.7 cm alternating vertical stripes, deployed in situ worldwide since 1967, Buren has installed around a hundred ‘plantations’: weathervanes striped on one side and solid-coloured on the other, spread from the hillside overlooking the museum to the meadow, gardens, hall and galleries, echoing the landscape Monet painted on his arrival in Giverny.<\/p>\n
This book brings the new creation into dialogue with the museum’s collections – Monet, Caillebotte, Bonnard, Hiramatsu – and with Buren’s own earlier work. It gathers photographs by Stéphane Aboudaram, a text by Cyrille Sciama, and an unpublished conversation between Buren, Sylvie Patry and Cyrille Sciama, closing with souvenir photographs of the artist’s interventions from 1975 to 2022.<\/p>\n
