Full Description
How did an argument in a Moscow kitchen between Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev result in the development of 200 midcentury modern vacation houses in the fishing community of Montauk, New York? "Leisurama" homes were designed in the office of industrial designer Raymond Loewy, sold through Macy's Department Store and were delivered to the buyer fully furnished - down to the towels and toothbrushes. The culmination of 17 years of research by documentary filmmaker Jake Gorst, Leisurama: Vacation Homes for the Average American, Brought to You by Geniuses, Spin Doctors, and Dreamers chronicles the evolution of Leisurama from its inception, starting with developer Herbert Sadkin, through the 1964 World's Fair, to present day. Contents: Foreword; Author's Note; Introduction; Chapter One: Moscow Builds a House; Chapter Two: There Are No Hills in Lauderhill; Chapter Three: A New Idea in Montauk; Chapter Four: War and Peace at the World's Fair; Chapter Five: It Became a House; Chapter Six: Geniuses, Spin Doctors, and Dreamers Revisited; Endnotes; Bibliography; Photo Credits; Acknowledgements.
