The Artist's Studio

The Artist's Studio

By (author) Jenny Lewis

$24.95

  • Portraits of artists in their studio, accompanied by quotes about the creative process
Full Description

Jenny Lewis spent three years in and out of studios across Hackney photographing a diverse range of artists inside their creative spaces. The project began with a portrait of fashion designer Isobel Webster and has grown organically into a ‘family tree’ of creatives – each person nominating someone else for the book. The result is a compelling picture of a creative community in the heart of East London at a time of great change as well as an unusual insight into the creative mind. Illustrators, filmmakers, jewelers, ceramicists and fashion designers not only invite us into their studio but also share their private thoughts about the creative process. Lewis notes that many of those that she photographed have since been forced to leave their studios due to rent increases which are threatening so many artists in the borough. This book will stand as a reminder and celebration of the spirit of creativity in one of London’s most dynamic areas.

About the Author
Jenny Lewis grew up in Little Clacton, Essex. She moved to London over twenty years ago after acquiring a Fine Art degree from Preston University. Since then she has made her living as an editorial photographer, but alongside this continues to pursue a range of personal work. Much of this centers on her experience of living and working in London. In 2015 she published One Day Young ISBN 9780957699885 with Hoxton Mini Press, a series that captures mother and child in the first twenty-four hours of life. The project aims to dilute the culture of fear surrounding birth; it's about empowering women and celebrating this transition. Whether photographing a celebrity, a new mother or the plethora of artists found in this book, her aim and approach is the same: to put the subject at ease and share a little about their world.
