This book<\/b> documents the surviving vernacular mosques of Cochin [now Kochi] – the jewel of the trading culture of the Malabar coast of Kerala, and where historic patterns of an urban trading culture remain visible in the buildings and layout of the city. Sited in compounds replete with coconut palms, the mosques offer an oasis of tranquility in densely populated neighborhoods. Large wood-framed pyramidal roofs, deep overhangs, and fine wooden craftsmanship distinguish the Kerala vernacular architecture. The mosques of Cochin stand as powerful and visible expressions of the integration of Islam into the culture of Malabar.
