  • Unique philosophical framework: Introduces Xiangwang — a contemplative mode of seeing that suspends knowledge, sensation, and analytical judgment, offering a fresh lens for contemporary art discourse
  • Interdisciplinary vision: Chi Wing Lo bridges architecture, design, and fine art, bringing a rare structural and spatial sensibility to painting
  • Original concept — the Zoophyte: A compelling invented category that defies biological and allegorical classification, inviting open-ended interpretation
  • Distinctive material palette: Mixed media combining ink, oil, acrylic, silver leaf, linen, and rice paper creates a layered, luminous visual world
  • Ascetic yet evocative color language: A tightly curated palette of deep black, newborn pink, grass green, and silver white achieves powerful emotional resonance through restraint
  • Rich conceptual depth: Three interwoven themes — the labyrinth as mode of existence, the limits of taxonomy, and the scale of life — provide substantial critical and curatorial context
  • Cross-cultural philosophical grounding: Draws on Chinese aesthetic thought (Xiangwang) in dialog with universal questions of perception, life, and form
Full Description

Chi Wing Lo’s work centers on the Zoophyte — forms that are neither nameable species nor allegorical figures, but transient crystallizations of perception hovering between animal and plant, emergence and withdrawal. The publication unfolds across three dimensions: the rediscovery of Xiangwang, a mode of seeing that suspends purposeful search; the transformation of the labyrinth into a mode of existence where “pausing understanding” allows images to breathe before being named; and an inquiry into the scale of life — when life becomes indistinguishable from geography, as slow as mineral, or so proliferative it erases individuality, and taxonomy begins to fail. Working across architecture, design, and painting, Lo uses ink, oil, acrylic, silver leaf, and mixed media on linen and rice paper. His restrained palette — deep black, newborn pink, ancient grass green, shimmering silver white — allows translucent forms to surface from darkness like memory before it solidifies, unfolding what he calls a “biology of personal time.”
