Sunil Gupta: Life with a Camera, 1970 – Now

Sunil Gupta (b. 1953 New Delhi, India) is an artist and activist. After moving to Canada as a teenager in the late 1960s, Gupta took up photography, which he studied at the New York school in 1976. He went on to receive: a Diploma from West Surrey College of Art & Design, Farnham, Surrey, UK (1981); an MA from Royal College of Art, London, UK (1983); and a PhD from the University of Westminster, London, UK (2019) with a thesis titled "Queer Migrations." Gupta's practice explores his experience as a queer Indian man and that of his circle and surroundings.

Natasha Bissonauth is Assistant Professor of Art History at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver. Her research centres queer aesthetics and archival logics across South Asia and Indian Ocean diasporas. Theo Gordon is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London. He is the co-author, with Flora Dunster, of Photography: A Queer History (2024). Guy Haywood is Curator and Exhibition Manager at Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge. Recent curatorial projects include Issam Kourbaj: Urgent Archive (2024). Andrew Nairne has been Director of Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge since 2011. He is a former Director of Dundee Contemporary Arts and Modern Art Oxford. Tausif Noor is a Curatorial Associate at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive at the University of California. His criticism and essays have appeared in Art Forum, frieze and the New York Times. Gregory Salter is Associate Professor in History of Art at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of Art and Masculinity in Post-War Britain: Reconstructing Home (2019). Gayatri Sinha is an art critic and curator based in New Delhi. She is the Founder and Director of Critical Collective, an initiative to build knowledge in the visual arts in India.
