Lita Cabellut (b. 1961, Spain) lives and works in the Netherlands and is internationally regarded as one of the leading painters of her generation. Her multidisciplinary oeuvre combines traditional techniques with contemporary applications, often on a monumental scale. Her work explores humanity, social engagement, vulnerability, dehumanization and transcendence.
As a young girl Cabellut was profoundly affected by the Old Masters at the Prado Museum in Madrid, an encounter that ultimately led her to the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her art reveals the influence of Goya, Velázquez, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Rothko, Kiefer, Bacon and Beuys. In this publication she demonstrates how Goya’s Disparates have inspired her. Works by Goya and Cabellut are shown side by side, revealing affinities and contrasts and opening new perspectives on human behavior, power, vulnerability and responsibility.
