Full Description

One of America’s most celebrated photographers throws open the doors of the two legendary New York discotheques he owned in the 1960s, sharing hundreds of never-before-seen photographs from the epicenter of the era’s music, fashion and fame.

Night Life: New York 1955–1970 includes images of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick and Catherine Deneuve, photographed not by an outsider looking in but by the man who owned the room.

Released to coincide with Jerry Schatzberg’s 100th birthday, the book features a preface by best-selling New York novelist Jonathan Lethem, alongside essays by Ben Amandes and Juliana Mendelsohn of the Jerry Schatzberg Archive, and a biography by Carlos Valladares. The book also features ephemera and press clippings, and first-hand testimony from club bouncers, DJs, insiders and Schatzberg himself.

With a recent MoMA film retrospective and exhibitions in New York and Paris, the Palme d’Or-winning Schatzberg remains as relevant as ever; this beautifully presented book shines a light on a lesser-known chapter of his life and work.

About the Author

Jerry Schatzberg was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1927. He began his career as a fashion photographer in the mid-1950s, as an assistant to William Helburn. Schatzberg became a prolific portrait photographer in the 1960s: Bob Dylan, Francis Coppola, Andy Warhol, Arlo Guthrie, Roman Polanski, Fidel Castro, Milos Forman, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and The Rolling Stones were a handful of his subjects. His work has been published in Vogue, McCalls, Esquire, Glamour, Town & Country and LIFE. Schatzberg made his debut as a film director in 1970 with Puzzle of a Downfall Child (starring Faye Dunaway) and went on to win the Palme d'Or with Scarecrow (starring Gene Hackman and Al Pacino) in 1973. He continued directing films into the 2000s. Schatzberg currently resides in New York City and will be celebrating his 100th birthday in 2027.
