Rock music, or rock for short, serves as a generic term for music styles that have emerged since the late 1960s from the mixing of rock ‘n’ roll of the late 1950s and early 1960s with other styles of music such as B. beat music and blues have developed. Many genres within rock music are identified with individual youth cultures.
Parallel to the emancipation of the long-playing record from the single, a completely new treatment of the record sleeves developed from the mid-1960s, which had never existed before in any music genre. An art form of its own emerged that tolerated no restrictions whatsoever and for which Klaus Voormann and Peter Blake for the Beatles, Storm Thorgerson for Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd as well as Doug Johnson for Tina Turner or Judas Priest deserved credit made. In this context, it also became common to design a separate band logo for each band.

The V&A may proudly hold the original artwork for the Rolling Stone’s ‘tongue and lips’ logo, but this is an anomaly. The cultural significance of the band logo has been overlooked. And yet, thousands of people wear them on T-shirts every day, mostly as badges of allegiance, but also simply because they look cool. Some have even become tropes – think The Ramones, Run DMC, AC/DC. (Q: How many people who wear Ramones T-shirts have seen them live or know their music?)
Band logos first emerged during the 1960s. They became commonplace in the 1970s and 1980s, when record companies and designers latched on to the power of music branding. Bands and logos may seem like unlikely bedfellows … yet it’s often the most eccentric, anarchic types who end up with the most compeling or ingenious visual marques to signify their attitude and style of music.
It is also interesting how many prominent graphic designers first became interested in logos and letterforms by doodling the names of their favorite bands on their school exercize books. Some of these efforts were reverential copies, others were improvements or embellished versions of the original. A wannabe designer’s version of attempting to emulate a Hendrix riff.

Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891-1953) was a central figure in the Russian Constructivist art movement; a radical activist, a pioneer of photomontage, a theorist, and a teacher. He was an active force in the organization of the first museums of modern art that arose in Russia in the first years after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Attending art school in 1914 in Kazan was to be a defining influence: that year Russian Futurists performed in the town, and Rodchenko saw their leading figures in action. It transformed his vision and he was still working with Futurist artists and their ideas twenty-five years later. And it was at art school where Rodchenko first met the artist Varvara Stepanova, with whom he collaborated extensively, and who would become his life-long partner. Terry O’Neill (1938-2019) was one of the world’s most celebrated and collected photographers, with work displayed and exhibited at first-class museums and fine-art galleries worldwide. His iconic images of Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Brigitte Bardot, Faye Dunaway, and David Bowie – to name but a few – are instantly recognizable across the globe.

Long before the age of digital, photographers would send physical prints to the papers and magazines. These prints were passed around, handled by many, stamped on the back, and often times captioned. At the dawn of the 1960s, when O’Neill’s career began, physical prints were the norm. Terry kept as many as he could that were sent back to him. “I just kept everything,” he says. “I don’t know why. Back then, there wasn’t really a reason to keep them. Photos were used straight away and then I just moved on to the next assignment. No one was thinking these would be worth anything down the line, let alone fifty years later.”
