This book, edited by the designer of Shanghai Astronomy Museum, Ennead Architects LLP, is an all-round record of the design and construction process of Shanghai Astronomy Museum, with a foreword written by Ye Shuhua—an astronomer and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a preface by Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The work of Dutch jewelry and object artist Felieke van der Leest (born in 1968) expresses the very special affection that she has for animals. With unbridled fantasy she creates pieces that ostentatiously, colorfully and playfully revolve around her little friends. She combines techniques used in textile work, such as crochet, with valuable metals and plastic toy animals. Within the international art jewelry scene she has developed her own special language with which she narrates intelligent and witty stories with her animal protagonists; her pieces inevitably conjure a smile upon the faces of those who view them. Characteristic for Van der Leest is the joy in her work, which is ever present yet sometimes carried off into childhood. Serious themes in her work are also expressed, including environmental protection and human approaches to animals. The renowned Dutch architectural scene of the 90s was followed by a generation of architects whose buildings are less spectacularly designed, but all the more refined and aware of the location and its atmosphere. Pieter Vermeersch (Belgium, 1973) is well-known for his gradual wall paintings that create powerful visual experiences. Vermeersch combines painting with architecture and works on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, marble and photographs. Beyond the traditional borders of the canvas, his investigations result in large-scale spatial interventions that manipulate the space. Time, color and space are the building blocks of his oeuvre: these concepts lie at the foundation of his gradual murals and architectural interventions.

Variations presents a complete survey of Vermeersch’s work and includes a broad selection of painted works (on canvas, stone, photographs and walls), installations and sketches. Each signature of the book is dedicated to a particular work or aspect of Vermeersch’s oeuvre. More than fifteen years Vanfleteren has wandered through and hunted in the ‘Belgicum’ territories, guided by emotion and by the love for his homeland. He made a journey through a scarred land, in search of the irretrievable identity of a country with the melancholic soul of an old nation.

This trilingual book marks the culmination of 10 years of collaboration between the photographer Max Pinckers and the writer Hans Theys, who was given permission to use a personal selection from all of Pinckers’ photographs to create a classic photobook without having to take into account their original context. The publication also contains an essay in which Theys discusses Pinckers’ oeuvre based on thoughts by Susan Sontag.

The book is published to accompany a solo exhibition in the Photo Museum of Antwerp from November 2021 until March 2022.
