Staring Into the Night is a book that brings together Amélie Bouvier’s research and artistic work inspired by astronomical stories and the history of sky observation, from the late 19th century to the present day. Amélie was particularly interested in the collection of astronomical photographic glass plates at Harvard College Observatory in the United States, which she was able to visit in 2019. Its contents have fueled her imagination for the past five years and form the basis of her latest projects, which explore the history of observation, our link to representation and scientific imagery, and the issues that shape our collective memory and heritage.

Karen Pontoppidan (b. 1968), Curator and Professor of Jewellery and Devices at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, invites 30 international artists to the annual jewelry exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum to present contemporary positions in studio jewelry. The publication SCHMUCKISMUS reveals that artists of this medium of expression no longer start from the mere decoration of individuals. Instead jewelry becomes a platform for discourse on cultural norms and values. Reflecting less on themselves as individuals, this new generation of artists is concentrating more on issues affecting society as a whole, such as ecology, consumer society or feminism. The young Fribourg architect and his team have already produced a notable number of high-quality buildings: small school buildings, for instance for the school in St-Cierges VD, which is placed with great topographic precision, the exciting ensemble of the vocational school in Domdidier FR and the cleverly conceived extension to the multifunctional hall in Sâles FR.

Philippe Van Cauteren, director of the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.) in Ghent, has for many years written letters to artists all over the world. He directs his thoughts in a very personal manner to artists who inspire him. Van Cauteren’s letters are written in a straightforward and accessible way; at times, they even verge on poetic. They offer an insight into how a curator experiences and interprets art, and also provide a clear and succinct introduction to the work of each artist to whom he writes. This richly illustrated book contains more than 100 letters. In an introductory manifesto – a final letter to Jan Hoet, his predecessor and the founder of S.M.A.K. – Van Cauteren also describes the ‘ideal museum of the future’. This book is a reflection of the contemporary cultural arena, the roles of a museum, and the way in which diverse parties can collaborate constructively. A miniature painting holds wondrous powers, beyond its defined space. A single image can summon up a world of adventures, enclosed chambers, gardens, rivers, lakes, forests, flowers, and an infinite variety of trees in bloom. In Indian art, miniatures were conceived as sets of narrative illustrations based on classic texts, such as the Ramayana, Bhagavata Purana, Ragamala, etc. Miniature painting continues to hold its appeal well into the 21st century. Contemporary artists of importance have imbibed influences from the miniature traditions, in technique, theme and coloration. This book explores a relationship between Indian contemporary painting and inspiration from medieval miniatures.

The author studies the art of five significant Indian modern and contemporary artists—Abanindranath Tagore, Manjit Bawa, Waswo X. Waswo with Rakesh Vijayvargiya, and Nilima Sheikh—who have resourced and reinvented iconic traditions with different perspectives and using different techniques. Accompanied with splendid illustrations, the essays bring attention to the Indian art of today with the magical transformation of older concepts and techniques in miniature painting into contemporary practice. 

Scenic Architecture Office always starts with responding to needs from body & mind, nature, and society, and tries to establish a balanced and dynamic relevance among them through ontological orders composed by space-time and tectonics. This collection includes 12 representative works in its 18 years of practice, and each work contains design concept, sketches, tectonic details, and photos. The works are categorized in “Courtyard Settlement”, “Extension of Homes”, and “Free Cell”. “Courtyard Settlement” refers to reconstruction of the spatial formtype of courtyard; “Extension of Homes”, expansion of the traditional house formtype; and “Free Cell” test of the new formtype. What was the meaning of the extraordinary collection of texts, sketches and graphic prints that Edvard Munch called The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? Get a glimpse into the artist’s world of ideas through one of the greatest mysteries he left behind. In this book you can experience The Tree of Knowledge as it was found in Munch’s home, with both loose, bound and blank pages. An essay by art historian Nora Ceciliedatter Nerdrum provides new perspectives on Munch’s most enigmatic project. No one knows why he created this album. Was it a book proposal? Or was it an attempt to organise his ideas?

What we do know is that he worked on the album for several decades, and that it was probably never completed. The most astonishing part of its content is perhaps Munch’s own texts about love, jealousy, life and death, composed in large, colorful lettering.

Muzharul Islam (1923–2012) has left behind an outstanding architectural legacy in Bangladesh, with a significance reaching far beyond the temporal and geographical horizons of its creation. Yet until now, his work has remained relatively unknown despite its relevance and singularity. This monograph presents numerous photographs and reproductions of detailed original drawings to introduce a series of unique buildings to an international audience, highlighting the Bengali architect’s way of thinking and actions, as well as his engagement in cross-cultural dialogue.

Contributions by practising architects from different continents present multifaceted perspectives on Islam’s work, placing him within a historical context and global interconnections. Memories of the Memories of the Black Rose Cat, the award-winning second novel by Veerapon Nitiprapha, is a generations-spanning family saga that explores the roots of the Chinese diaspora in Siam and how the tragedy of ruined love, maternal betrayal and futile ambition shape the lives of Tong’s clan members, each of them hounded by their own ghosts and burdened by their own sins. All of this is played out against the backdrop of Siam’s mid-century social and political history, the most chaotic period the formation of the nation.

Roman church interiors throughout the Early Modern age were endowed with rich historical and visual significance. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in anticipation of and following the Council of Trent, and in response to the expansion of the Roman Curia, the chapel became a singular arena in which wealthy and powerful Roman families, as well as middle-class citizens, had the opportunity to demonstrate their status and role in Roman society. In most cases the chapels were conceived not as isolated spaces, but as part of a more complex system, which involved the nave and the other chapels within the church, in a dialogue among the arts and the patrons of those other spaces. Iran, the former Persia, lies at an interface between West-East and North-South. Several early trade routes crossed the country, connecting Asia, Africa and Europe, and the cultural wealth and scenic beauty of this region has attracted travelers for over 2,000 years. Per Fronth is one of Norway’s most distinctive contemporary artists, dynamically redefining the relationship between painting and photography in influential and innovative works. Painting with photography as his raw material, Fronth’s pictorial universe is captivating, bold, controversial, and seductive. Central to Fronth’s overall artistic practice are the challenging aspects of the human condition. Fronth produces large-format artworks in series and different disciplines that are politically, environmentally, socially, and highly emotionally charged: from the war zones in Afghanistan, to the indigenous peoples’ fight for their own land in the Amazonas region, and back to his own life, in native Norway, where he explores visual narratives of innocence and the coming of age. In his most recent project Fronth creates controversy by introducing paid product placement into his artworks already acquired by museums. In doing so he elevates the discussion as to what the value of art is.

Grayson Perry is one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists and cultural figures. The visual art in Ziltes was created from a mixture of oxygen and salt during the active time in the artist’s practice. The creative result suggests a conscious and radical act of resistance by the artist as a human being against linear time, a time that moves forward too fast for anyone who captures life. Virginie Platteau wrote nine poems (FR/ NL /EN) that are scattered throughout the pages and written in dialog with the artworks. Bernadette Messiaen has been practicing art for over forty years, however this is the first time she is coming out as an artist.

A portrait of an eminent jewelry artist and her unique creations!

Inspired by the Arte Povera movement, the Italian jewelry artist Annamaria Zanella (b. 1966) uses base materials, which only gain meaning through their context. Corroded metal or found objects convey statements that can be both political and personal in nature. Zanella wants to bring the soul of the material to light through the work of her own hands.

The color used is intended to evoke feelings and reactions. To this end Zanella studied the history of colors and their production, especially that of her unmistakable blue. She produced a blue pigment according to a recipe from the fourteenth century, invoking in its modern use pioneering artists such as Giotto, Wassily Kandinsky and Yves Klein.

An ode to Alberic ‘Briek’ Schotte, the godfather of all flandriens.

The heroes of the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix are tough and determined. The Flemings specialize in riding on bad roads and in bad weather. Yet Capdevila does not just paint metal; his one-off jewelry pieces are rather the materialization of a creative process in which metal and color combine to become a completely new entity. Chunghi Choo (b. 1938 in South Korea) is a world-renowned metalsmith and jewelry artist who is best known for her works that incorporate such techniques as electroforming and electro-applique. Choo’s artwork is represented in major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (US), the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK) and the Musée des Arts décoratifs (FR). In addition, she is professor emeritus of the University of Iowa (US), where she established a metals program, which she brought to international prominence during her more than thirty years of service. Many of her students have since become critically acclaimed artists in the fields of fine arts, jewelry, textiles, metalsmithing and sculpture. This volume reviews Choo’s remarkable career, showing selected pieces from the last six decades of extraordinary craftsmanship that earned her status as Elected Fellow of the American Craft Council. Works by thirty former students reveal Choo’s influence on a subsequent generation.
