Whether pizza is served as high-end cuisine or a poor man’s food, this global product transcends the boundaries of culture and social class. The circular piece of dough has long become an established superfood. It is so much more than just something we eat. Aside from culinary considerations, the preparation, consumption and ubiquity of pizza involves at least as many social aspects. These must be taken into account in order to understand the entirety of this phenomenon. For instance, in sociology the ‘pizza effect’ refers to reciprocal processes of reception and exchange and thus to the constant transformation of cultures. Only recently did the UNESCO in Paris allow Italy to formally register the preparation of pizza as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. That’s iconic!
The collection ‘Pizza is God’ accompanies the eponymous international group exhibition. Situating a cultural phenomenon in the world of contemporary art, the exhibition will be staged by NRW-Forum Düsseldorf in 2018. This feast for the eyes, which combines painting, photography, net art, as well as video and performance, is complemented in the book by texts and essays written by renowned experts from the fields of food history, culture and science.

Jewelry Stories highlights the Museum of Arts and Design’s unique, world-class collection of studio and contemporary art jewelry from the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia, a medium that comprises one-third of its permanent collection. Artists working in this field create jewelry rooted in sculptural experimentation and the concept of art as a wearable medium. The pieces featured represent the history of art jewelry as told from a largely US perspective. Jewelry artists are inspired by such subjects as found objects and materials, as well as by politics and pressing social issues, allowing for the development of unique, personal narratives in each piece. This book explores the figure of Ghitta Carell (1899–1972), a Hungarian-born photographer who was naturalized Italian. Ghitta was born into a Jewish family of humble origins; at a very young age she moved to Italy, where she quickly became a very sought-after portrait photographer. Intellectuals, actors, generals, and political leaders posed in her studio in Rome, as well as famous women and members of royalty and the middle class.
Her black-and-white pictures were taken with a view camera: Ghitta crafted her photographs with mastery and delicacy, and thus created luminous and soft images, intervening through subtraction by removing the most superficial layers. This is how she achieved a kind of unmasking, thanks to which she restored not only the face but first and foremost the soul of those photographed. Ghitta Carell died in Haifa, Israel, leaving behind more than 50,000 plates now mostly dispersed.

This publication depicts the life and work of the Stuttgart garden designer Gustav Adolf Wagner (1817–1893), who in the second half of the 19th century adopted C.C.L. Hirschfeld’s and Ludwig Sckell’s new concepts of garden aesthetics and translated them into romantic park landscapes. His most significant works—which include the Stadtgarten in Stuttgart, the Faberpark near Nuremberg, and other public gardens in the City of Stuttgart such as Hasenberg, Karlshöhe, Feuersee, and Uhlandshöhe, which he supervised as the first garden inspector—are presented here in-depth for the very first time.
Wagner’s gardens symbolize the need for public green spaces and urban park landscapes for an increasingly self-assured middle-class society. Numerous hitherto unpublished projects, for example from Wilhelm Neubert’s Schlüssel zur Bildenden Gartenkunst (1853) or from other contemporary sources, throw new light onto 19th-century garden landscape design and reintroduce the life and work of this unjustly forgotten garden designer.

The two little legs of the H, entangled with fiery tongues and other body parts – represent ‘Horny’. The B, formed by two little birds lovingly interlocking their beaks – stands for ‘Lovebirds’. The ‘Alphabet of Love’ by illustrator Sanny Winters is world-class. Her love for letters and for love itself come together in her new book, where her illustrations are interspersed with excerpts from world literature. Armed with nothing but red, black, and white – and tons of inspiration – she transforms each letter into an icon of love.
Christian Krohg was a key figure in the Norwegian art community of the 1880s and 1890s, and was strongly influenced by the ideology of realism. In his view, art should have meaning for a broad segment of the population, not merely serve as wall decorations for the bourgeoisie. Three types of motifs were recurrent themes for Krohg during this period: the working-class hero, scenes from family life and “the fallen woman”. Many people responded to his literary and visual representations of the poverty-stricken girl Albertine. He depicted members of the working class with great sympathy in paintings such as Errand Boy Drinking Coffee and Woman Cutting Bread. The Gaihede family, fishermen from Skagen in Denmark, are portrayed in many everyday situations, as are members of Krohg’s own family. The catalogue sheds light on the subject matter of the exhibition, Krohg’s period of study in Berlin and its impact on him, his relationship with Georg Brandes, the novel Albertine and Krohg’s own use of photography as a model for his work and a medium.
