About the Author

JR (born 1983, Paris) is a French artist whose work lies at the crossroads of photography, public art, film, and social engagement. His career began in 2001 when he found a camera in the Paris metro. Since then, he has pasted monumental black-and-white images on walls, rooftops, monuments, and trains around the world, reaching audiences who rarely visit museums. His major projects include Women Are Heroes, Inside Out — the global participatory art project launched with his TED Prize — the Chronicles series, and his interventions at the Louvre, the Panthéon, and the Palais Garnier in Paris. Faces Places, the film he co-directed with Agnès Varda, was nominated for an Academy Award. He is represented by Perrotin, Pace Gallery, and Galleria Continua.
