LONDON, NEW YORK — ACC Art Books, one of the world’s leading publishers and distributors of books on the arts and visual culture is proud to announce two publications for the Spring of 2027, Stax Records: Making Soul Music and Breaking Boundaries | The Artists Behind the Memphis Sound and Jerry Schatzberg Night Life: New York 1955–1970, which have been unveiled at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Stax Records: Making Soul Music and Breaking Boundaries | The Artists Behind the Memphis Sound by Billboard’s executive director of R&B/hip-hop, Gail Mitchell, tells the story of the origins and early years of Stax Records through the remarkable archive of photographer Bill Carrier Jr.

Featuring 30 Stax superstars, including Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the book captures the musicians and defining moments behind the legendary Memphis sound. More than a record label, Stax became a cultural force, producing timeless anthems that transformed American music and provided a soundtrack to the civil rights movement and an era of profound social change.

With a foreword by award-winning songwriter and former Stax publicity director Deanie Parker, Stax Records is published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Stax/Volt Revue European Tour and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the label.

Night Life: New York 1955-1970 by Jerry Schatzberg reveals unpublished work from prolific photographer Jerry Schatzberg coinciding with his 100th birthday celebration.

Renowned for his iconic portraits of Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and countless other cultural figures, Schatzberg was not only a portrait photographer. As the owner of two influential New York City discotheques in the 1960s, he was also at the center of its vibrant social and creative world.

This book spotlights the historical and cultural moments were the world of dance, music, fashion, artistry, and nightlife collide with images of Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Baby Jane Holzer, Catherine Deneuve, Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, and Edie Sedgwick, along with contemporaneous ephemera and news clippings written both by those who bore witness and looked on from afar.

Interviews, stories and anecdotes from those still living, including Schatzberg himself; Salvation’s bouncer and floor manager; Ondine’s disc jockey; and writers and historians offer an intimate perspective on the people and places that defined the era.

“Together these two books offer an essential look at two defining chapters in American music and cultural history, both of which still resonate strongly today. Working on the Stax book has been an incredibly uplifting experience for us and we are excited to work with Jerry in his 100th year, having previously published his Dylan book back in 2018,” said James Smith, Publisher and CEO of ACC Art Books.
