Nilima Sheikh: Fractured Skies is the first publication to accompany an international exhibition dedicated to the celebrated Indian artist Nilima Sheikh, tracing her practice from the late 1960s to the present. Across paintings, scrolls, and mixed-media works, Sheikh brings together personal memory, literature, history, and politics, creating visual narratives in which beauty and violence, intimacy and upheaval coexist. Her work draws on diverse artistic traditions and literary sources while remaining deeply engaged with contemporary realities.
The volume features new essays by leading curators, scholars, and critics alongside a selection of Sheikh’s own writings assembled from across several decades. Together, these texts illuminate the evolution of her artistic language and her sustained engagement with questions of place, gender, memory, and historical reckoning.
With contributions by Roobina Karode, Cara Manes, Avijna Bhattacharya, Khushmi Mehta, and Deeksha Nath.
