Full Description

This first volume of the catalogue raisonné of Joaquín Sorolla Bastida’s paintings includes 1,063 works, with their corresponding illustrated technical data sheets, which he produced between 1876 and 1894, when he created La vuelta de la pesca (The Return from Fishing). This painting encapsulates the vision of painting that was being awarded prizes at international exhibitions and for which the painter of the light is not so well known. However, it is exciting to see the process behind this series of paintings, which, as it matures, exudes technical and stylistic ease.

For this reason, the Sorolla we discover in this volume, new to many and broader than we thought, aims to continue to fascinate the public and open up new lines of research and study.

About the Author

Great-granddaughter of painter Joaquín Sorolla Bastida, Bianca Pons-Sorolla is an independent researcher and renowned specialist in the work of Joaquín Sorolla. With a diploma in Art and Interior Architecture from the IADE International School, she has worked with architects such as Javier Feduchi and Rafael Moneo. She has been a patron of the Sorolla Museum Foundation since 1992 and was chair of its Standing Committee (2012-2021). She is the author of the most comprehensive biography of the work of the painter Joaquín Sorolla, on whom she has also given numerous lectures, written articles and collaborated on exhibitions, as well as curating numerous exhibitions. Since 1990, she has also been responsible for an ambitious project to which she has devoted more than three decades of research, whose results are now to be published in four volumes, chronologically integrating the approximately 4,200 works (including oil paintings, watercolours and gouaches) that make up Sorolla's pictorial output.
