Mmm, Gotta Try a Little Harder, It Could Be Sweet is the first institutional solo exhibition of work by Harold Offeh in the UK. This fully illustrated book documents two decades of video, performance and collaborative projects by the artist, as well as a new series of photographs depicting Offeh re-performing works in his archive. Offeh’s work interrogates our acceptance of social, political and racial models in society, often drawing inspiration from mainstream music, film and media. The title of the exhibition is taken from lyric by the British band Portishead and corresponds to three thematic sections of the exhibition: Mmm, a new multi-channel sound installation, Gotta Try a Little Harder considers Offeh’s use of performance as an investigative tool and It Could Be Sweet looks at the artists participatory and collaborative works on themes of desire, utopianism, queer identity and acts of resistance. The book includes a preface by Lubaina Himid and new essays by Sepake Angiama, David. A. Bailey, Anna Khimasia and Harold Offeh. 

Ian McKeever RA (b. 1946) began painting in 1969. His early work grew out of a conceptual interest in landscape, painting and photography, reflecting his journeys to Greenland, Papua New Guinea and Siberia. In the mid-1980s his art became more abstract, revealing his interest in the human body and architectural structures. McKeever has published many texts concerning his travels and the nature of painting, and this selection – ranging from Piero della Francesca to Joan Mitchell – brings these together in one volume for the first time.

Gaetano Pesce traces the visionary collaboration between the Italian designer and American entrepreneur Jay Chiat, founder of the advertising agency ChiatDay. Through 500 images, rare archives, and previously unpublished interviews, this book explores the creation of ChiatDay’s New York offices—true laboratories of the virtual office concept. Conceived in the 1990s, this groundbreaking project merges art, architecture, and technology, redefining the very notion of workspace.

These three volumes describe and illustrate the trilogy of projects that Craig Hamilton has designed at Old Parkland, Dallas, an office campus developed by Crow Holdings. Hamilton’s work there comprises an office building and a bell tower or Campanile on the existing West Campus, together with the entirely new East Campus which occupies a complete city block and comprises of extensive new office accommodation, an orangery restaurant and a small theater. Pierre-Émile Legrain (1888-1929) was a French bookbinder, framer, landscape designer, furniture designer, and interior architect. This is the first full-length monograph about him, exploring his life and his creations in every genre, and highlighting the formal links between his work as an ensemblier, bookbinder, and draftsman. Pierre Legrain is credited with revolutionizing bookbinding in the early 20th century. In 1916 he was commissioned by the French bibliophile, couturier, and collector Jacques Doucet to design bindings for his extensive library. He created nearly 400 unique bindings for him, and numerous frames for Doucet’s exceptional modern art collection – including a steel frame for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon – as well as a series of African-inspired furniture. He was a member of the UAM, whose logo he designed, and he associated with André Breton, Paul Éluard, Jean Cocteau, the sculptors Gustave Miklos and Henri Laurens, the painter Francis Picabia, and the milliner Jeanne Tachard for whom he designed a garden. His rare body of work – a hundred or so pieces of furniture and a few interiors – is dispersed today in museums and private collections throughout the world.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a generation of young Americans rejected the promise of prosperity and the suburban dream embraced by their parents. Everett Fahy’s writings are of fundamental importance to the study of Tuscan Renaissance painting from the late 14th to the 16th century. An endeavor that lasted 50 years, starting with his 1965 essay on Piero di Cosimo and ending with his contributions for the 2015 Florentine exhibition on the same artist. In between Fahy wrote on some of the most acclaimed and loved artists (from Beato Angelico to Botticelli, from Ghirlandaio to the young Michelangelo), but also on lesser known masters such as Lorenzo di Nicolò, Spinello Aretino, the Master of the Campana panels, the Master of the Fiesole Adoration of the Magi, etc., and through his pioneering studies rediscovered minor artistic schools, such as the Lucca school. Fahy reconstruction of Fra Bartolomeo’s early career is considered a classic of art historiography.

Mohandas K. Gandhi has been described as ‘an artist of non-violence,’ crafting as he did a set of practices of the self and politics that earned him the mantle of Mahatma, ‘the great soul.’ His philosophy and praxis of satyagraha, non-violent civil disobedience, has been analyzed extensively. But is satyagraha also an aesthetic regime, with practices akin to a work of art? Is Gandhi, then, an artist of disobedience? Sumathi Ramaswamy explores these questions with the help of India’s modern and contemporary artists who have over the past century sought out the Mahatma as their muse and invested in him across a wide range of media from painting and sculpture to video installation and digital production. At a time when Gandhi is a hallowed but hollow presence, why have they lavished so much attention on him? A hundred and fifty years after his birth, Gandhi is hyper visible across the Indian landscape from tea stalls and government offices to museums and galleries. This is ironical given that the Mahatma appeared to have had little time for the visual arts or for artists for that matter.
