Betzy Akersloot-Berg. One of a kind

Oct. 3, 2026 – Feb. 28, 2027

From 3 October, Museum Panorama Mesdag will open the first major Dutch retrospective on the Norwegian-Dutch artist Betzy Akersloot-Berg (1850-1922).

Betzy Akersloot-Berg was a pioneer, a world traveller, and one of Europe’s most important female marine and landscape painters of her time. “Remarkable boldness, individuality and strength”: this is how critics described her daring style as early as 1890.

From the rugged Norwegian coastline to the beaches of Scheveningen and Vlieland, Akersloot-Berg constantly sought the power of the sea, light, and changing weather. Her strong brushwork and impressive seascapes made a deep impression on the Dutch press, which mentioned her in the same breath as Hendrik Willem Mesdag.

For the first time, Betzy Akersloot-Berg. One of a kind brings together an extensive selection of works from museums and private collections in the Netherlands and abroad. Among them are key works that have rarely or never been shown to the public. The exhibition also highlights the remarkable friendship between Betzy Akersloot-Berg and the artist couple Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, as well as her notable role as a successful, internationally operating artist and businesswoman.

Alongside the exhibition, an inspiring programme of in-depth talks and exclusive guided tours invites you to discover the life story, travels and artistic practice of Betzy Akersloot-Berg.

The accompanying publication, Betzy Akersloot-Berg. One of a kind, features numerous illustrations and new insights into her life and work. Available in the museum shop and webshop. Price: €35.
