Hidden treasures of the graphic arts
Jean-Etienne Liotard: Between Court Portraits and the Ottoman World
Thursday, November 5, 12:30 p.m.
Every first Thursday of the month, the MAH hosts graphic arts pop-ups.
You are invited to stop by GamMAH at your convenience between 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM to discover hidden treasures from the graphic arts collection, including prints, drawings, and rare books from Europe and beyond.
An art historian will be there to welcome you.
In conjunction with the exhibition Liotard & Marie Antoinette: Faces Under Scrutiny, this pop-up exhibition presents portraits by one of the greatest portraitists of the 18th century, Jean-Etienne Liotard. Born in Geneva in 1702 and died there in 1789, this artist enjoyed an international career, receiving commissions for royal portraits as well as for prominent figures of his time, though some of his portraits remain unidentified. A cosmopolitan artist who traveled throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire, this pop-up exhibition highlights some of the distinctive characteristics of Liotard’s portraits; it also explores the impact of the subject’s social status on the execution of the work, as well as how his artistic approach evolved in accordance with European and Eastern conventions.
