Woodcut Women: British prints inspired by Japan
From Sat 22 May 2027 – Sun 5 Sep 2027
Open daily, 10am–5pm
Woodcut Women: British Prints Inspired by Japan is the first ever exhibition of Japanese-inspired woodcuts made by British women in the early 20th century. The exhibition brings together more than 120 artworks by over 30 artists, many with connections to Scotland. Woodcut Women: British Prints Inspired by Japan shines a light on a remarkable generation of artists whose contribution has been largely overlooked.
Taking place across the upper floor of Modern Two, see familiar scenes in a new way with vibrant multi-colour prints using Japanese techniques and design, alongside works by the Japanese artists who inspired them. As well as delving into printmaking tools and techniques, Woodcut Women tells the stories behind key artists, such as Mabel Royds and Elizabeth Keith, exploring friendships, artistic connections and the obstacles women had to overcome to pursue their artistic careers.
