A Future for the Past – Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland
1 Apr — 31 Mar 2031
Emil Bührle Collection
On permanent loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Emil Bührle Collection unites important works of French Impressionism and Modernism. Since 2023, it has been presented within a contextualized exhibition concept.
The Kunsthaus Zürich is presenting the long-term loan from the EG Bührle Collection Foundation in a new format. As completely as possible, 205 works from the collection are being displayed in a classic salon or Petersburg hanging – an exhibition style prevalent in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This dense arrangement offers a comprehensive view of the collection and makes its scope and diversity immediately apparent. On display are well-known works as well as historically significant pieces from French Impressionism and Modernism, including paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Auguste Renoir.
The presentation is complemented by an archival exhibition that documents the exhibition history of the collection and its public reception in different eras and countries. It shows how the perception of the collection has changed over time and makes its historical and social context visible.
The exhibition was developed by a core team from across departments at the Kunsthaus Zürich. In parallel, the museum is working with an interdisciplinary feedback panel of external experts on the next major presentation of the collection, planned for 2027/2028.
Since April 1, 2026, the Kunsthaus Zürich has been conducting a five-year research project investigating the provenance of the 205 works in the EG Bührle Collection Foundation. This project is being carried out according to the high standards of the Zurich Art Society for provenance research. The project also includes cataloging and digitizing the archive of the EG Bührle Collection Foundation and, in collaboration with the Institute of Art History at the University of Zurich and its provenance research focus, conducting extensive fundamental research into the history of the EG Bührle Collection within its local, national, and international context.
