Inspired by the Galloway light they discovered while painting in and around Kirkcudbright, the four artists who came to be called the Scottish Colourists went on to international fame at the start of the 20th century. Influenced by their time in France where they were exposed to work by the Impressionists and Fauvists, Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell returned home to reinvigorate Scottish art. Though their reputations faded in the wake of the Second World War, today they are once more rightly recognised as key figures in the story of Scottish art. Respected art historian Alice Strang brings them back to Galloway in this special event in which she outlines why their work is so important and why this part of the country was central to their story.

About the Author 

With a quarter of a century of experience as a national gallery senior curator and as an international auction house specialist, Alice Strang has been responsible for overseeing many major exhibitions including the work of the Scottish Colourists, modern Scottish women painters and sculptors and 20th-century Scottish Art. She is a BBC Expert Woman and a Saltire Society Outstanding Woman of Scotland. She has given lectures at the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh and London and has written for the British Art Journal and Scottish Art News.
