Dress Codes – Paleis Het Loo, The Netherlands

9 Oct — 8 Mar 2026

Face to Face with the Clothing of Queens Wilhelmina, Emma, and Máxima
With outfits worn on the red carpet by Kendall Jenner, Margot Robbie, and more. You can experience this all in Dress Codes: a unique fashion exhibition.

Royal Rules

Dress codes have existed throughout history: who do you want to be, where do you want to belong, and what does your clothing say about that? These questions haven’t changed much over the centuries. At court, fashion played an important role in expressing personal style and status.

The exhibition guides you through specific royal clothing rules, focusing on questions such as: what is a court train? What do you wear for an outdoor walk? Is white the color of marriage or mourning? Iconic pieces, such as Wilhelmina’s wedding dress, as well as clothing for hunting, ceremonies, and parties, are on display.

More than 200 Garments

Dress codes aren’t just about the past, they also apply to the present. The dress codes of the past are reflected on today’s red carpet and social media. In Dress Codes, you’ll also see many iconic pieces on display for the first time: clothing worn by style icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Princess Diana, and Lady Gaga, as well as unique items from the private collection of the Dutch and Belgian royal families. Top designs by Chanel, Gucci, Givenchy, and Dutch fashion houses such as Viktor&Rolf and JANTAMINIAU are also featured. Nowhere else will you find so much fashion in one place.

Partnership

The exhibition has been created in partnership with Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and is sponsored by the Culture Fund, Fonds 21, the Mondrian Fund, Apeldoorn municipal council, Stichting Zabawas, the Gravin van Bylandt Foundation, Nederlandse Kostuumvereniging and the Hendrik Muller Fund.
