Giorgio Morandi – Museo Morandi, Italy
3 Dec — 26 Feb 2023
The Museo Morandi is pleased to host and make available to the public an important nucleus of works by Giorgio Morandi from the private collection of Antonio and Matilde Catanese.
The exhibition Giorgio Morandi. Opere dalla collezione Antonio e Matilde Catanese presents 27 works belonging to a collection which fits well into the tradition of collecting in Lombardy, that was characterized in the 30s and 40s by famous collections of numerical and qualitative relevance. It was an actual passion which pushed the Catanese spouses, since the 60s, to buy the first works by Morandi and to show their refined and forward-looking taste in a city like Milan which, in the XX century, played a key role especially in the world of arts and collecting.
The Catanese Collection represents “an exemplary microcosm for deciphering and understanding Morandi’s activity“, as highlighted by Maria Cristina Bandera, art historian, member of the Board of Directors and of the Scientific Commission of the Fondazione di Studi di Storia dell’Arte Roberto Longhi . This, above all, thanks to the number of works present in the collection, created over a period of time that covers almost all the years of the Bolognese master’s activity and which deal with all the themes and techniques he works with, as well as due to the undoubted relevance of the pieces that are part of the collection.
