Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. It’s organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.
This is a night dedicated to hip hop.
Guest speakers:
Normski– Photographer, broadcaster and DJ with a focus on hip hop, fashion and street culture. His new book Man with the Golden Shutter presents his personal journey through that world from the mid-1980s to early 1990s, from visiting US hip hop acts such as Run DMC, LL Cool J and Public Enemy, to developing British music scenes such as Jungle, Garage and Techno.
Ric Flo– A rap artist who uses music, creativity and his lived experience in foster care to empower young people. He recently won the Inspiration in Music Award for his pilot project – Mantra Music CIC, the world’s first record label exclusively for care experienced artists. Working with musicians, artists and organisations, Ric is on a mission to change the narrative of foster care. With his rap collective Jungle Brown he’s been blessed to perform at prestigious festivals like Glastonbury, Boomtown and Lovebox, and supported De La Soul, The Pharcyde and Big Daddy Kane.
Dan Lish– Artist who has worked within the creative industry for over 25 years, with a client list including Lucas Arts, Sony, Activision, Rockstar Games and Bafta Award-winning Bossa Studios. His passion for hip hop began in the early 80s, expressing himself through Dance/B-Boyin’, Graffiti Art and Djing. After his involvement in pirate radio in the early 90s, he moved to New York where he lived until 2006. Dan has created artwork for artists such as De La Soul, Bootsy Collins, Mix master Mike, Omar, The Roots, Rakim, The Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill and many more. He crowdfunded his art book ‘Egostrip’ In 2022, which led him to display and auction his artwork for the ground-breaking show; The Art and Influence of Hip Hop at Sotheby’s in New York City. Dan is currently producing Egostrip 2, a larger version encompassing many years of hip hop and Black music-inspired artwork.
