Monheim am Rhein: Public Art – Germany

1 May — 31 May 2027

Art in public spaces

Since 2017, Monheim has expanded and developed the artwork it exhibits in public spaces. The new concept was driven by the desire to recognise art presented in public spaces as an important element of the cultural landscape of Monheim, but also to create unique material values with the projects that were put into practice, and safeguard these values over the long term. The artwork selected should pick up on the aesthetics of urban spaces, streets and squares, complementing their design and enhancing public perception of the places the art occupies.

The book

Monheim am Rhein, a medium-sized town located between Cologne and Düsseldorf, boasts an impressive collection of public art. Internationally renowned artists have realised projects here ranging from traditional sculpture to light and sound art, and even an artificial geyser. This allows visitors to experience a wide range of what public art can be today. The main works, created between 2018 and 2024, are now presented in a catalogue raisonné. It features works by Tony Cragg, Angela de Wejier, inges idee, Jeppe Hein, Saman Hidayat, Thomas Kesseler, Mischa Kuball, Markus Lüpertz, Thomas Stricker, Timm Ulrichs, and Robert Wilson.
