The Musée d’Orsay, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna Milano, and CMS.Cultura are organizing an exhibition dedicated to the artist Paul Troubetzkoy. The exhibition will take place at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris from September 30, 2025, to January 11, 2026, and at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan from February 27, 2026, to June 28, 2026.
The exhibition will reconstruct the unusual career of this Italian artist, a Russian prince by birth and a Parisian by adoption, who simultaneously embarked on a brilliant career in the United States. Thanks to his great talent as a portraitist, he was sought after by a cosmopolitan elite, celebrities, and even the first stars of American cinema. His life was marked by crucial encounters and friendships with literary figures such as Tolstoy in Russia and Georges Bernard Shaw in Paris, with whom he shared a vegetarian lifestyle, particularly unusual for the time. In addition to the portraits that made him famous, the exhibition will highlight his animalistic sculptures and other surprising works.
The exhibition invites us to reconsider his technique and his distinctive style. Troubetzkoy’s approach to his models, using small, energetic touches that, in his bronze castings, capture the light and make it vibrate on the metal surfaces, clearly highlights the question of Impressionism in sculpture.
