Ray Harryhausen: Myths in Motion
The story of a legendary animator who changed the course of film history, this special exhibition has been created for The Arc and drawn from the incredible archive of The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation.
Cost: Adult – £5.45, Concession – £4.50, Child – £4.00
Dates: 26 Sep 2026 – 16 Feb 2027
Harryhausen’s innovation in stop motion had a lasting effect on viewers and filmmakers alike. His creatures – the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Minaton from Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) and Medusa from Clash of the Titans (1981) – were animated in a way that had never been seen before. Tributes from filmmakers such as Peter Jackson and Aardman Animations, who cite Harryhausen’s importance, will also feature in the exhibition.
Together with daughter, Vanessa Harryhausen, whose personal contributions will be found throughout the exhibition, we’ve selected over 70 objects to bring to Winchester. They include paintings by artists who were early influencers on Harryhausen’s art and storytelling. Through sketches and original models, the exhibition highlights the inventiveness, incredible artistry and resulting awe of Harryhausen’s career.

Registration is now open for the exhibition taking place September – November this year.
You can be: anyone living in Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth or the Isle of Wight – we’re extending out of the city to make it a big, regional event. Any age, any ability.
You can submit: artwork in any medium – small sculpture/models, film, animation, written texts, paintings, drawings etc. It can be something new or old – even something you made when you were a child, there’s no date limit. Your tribute to Ray could be designs for your own creatures, an epic landscape, a poster design for one of his films, an animation – anything that shows your love of Ray’s magical worlds of fantasy sci-fi.
The submission process is online and artworks to be included in the exhibition will be chosen by a group panel. The exhibition will be on display for two months, at City Space, our gallery on the mezzanine floor. The exhibition is a tribute, not a competition, but the creators of our favourite submissions will be invited to join VIP guests (including The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation) at The Gallery private view later in September. There will be merchandise goodies to give away too.
When you’re ready, go to the typeform Open Exhibition Submissions and tell us all about your artwork.
Thank you and good luck, from everyone at The Arc!
