Samantha McEwen – Modesti Perdriolle Gallery, Belgium
10 Apr — 28 Sep 2024
Modesti Perdriolle Gallery presents a group of works from the 1980s to the present day by
Samantha McEwen, an Anglo-American artist born in London in 1960. On this occasion, the first monograph dedicated to the life and work of Samantha McEwen, published by 5 Continents Éditions, will be launched.
Samantha McEwen arrived in New York at the age of 18. She enrolled at the School of Visual Arts where she became friends with one of the students, Keith Haring, then Kenny Scharf.
New York was then a village where all artists rubed shoulders. Samantha participated in the intense life of the East Village. She collaborated on numerous exhibitions both in Clubs and at theTony Schafrazi gallery in 1985 and 1987.
The end of the 1980s was marked by AIDS. Samantha resettled in London. These were not easy years for female artists. We would have to wait until the 2010s to see Samantha McEwen’s paintings again in renowned places: in 2015 at the Pace Gallery in London in a group exhibition in tribute to the great English art dealer Robert Fraser and in 2017 at the MoMA in the exhibition testimony ‘Club 57, Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, New York, 1978-1983’.
