Rare Special Editions available from ACC Art Books –  More Information

This volume is published to mark the 40th anniversary of the artists’ collective Rrose Irwin Sélavy and to accompany the exhibition at HMKV Dortmund. Since 1983, IRWIN has been investigating the art history of Eastern Europe, especially the ambivalent legacy of the historical avant-garde and its totalitarian successors, i.e. the dialectic of avant-garde and totalitarianism. Since the 1990s, the focus of the group has been on challenging the art history of “Western Modernism” in a critical and iconoclastic way. The artists playfully and darkly contrast it with the “retro avant-garde” and an “Eastern Modernism”.

The book, which can be read from both sides, is made up of two parts: the first chapter explores the black humour that is a consistent element in IRWIN’s work. The second chapter examines issues relating to the state – and how IRWIN uses them to comment on current topics such as migration.

Created in 1936, following the bequest of Count Moïse de Camondo to the French State in memory of his son Nissim, who died for France in 1917, the Musée Nissim de Camondo houses a rich collection of 18th-century art objects. Reflecting the donor’s taste for this period of French art, the collection includes a significant number of pieces of furniture and objects embellished with gilded bronze ornaments. Gathered with incredible foresight by Moïse de Camondo between 1890 and 1935, these gilded bronzes reflect the evolution of styles during the 18th century, from the fantasies of rocaille, the severity of the return to the antique model, to the delicacy of the Louis XVI style. This catalogue presents a selection of 30 furniture bronzes, all masterpieces. Signed Osmond, attributed to Jean-Louis Prieur, François Rémond or Jean-Noël Turpin, they testify to the expertise of Parisian gilders in the second half of the 18th century, as well as to their collaboration with other trades – draftsmen, sculptors, founders, goldsmiths and watchmakers. The gilded bronzes in the Musée Nissim de Camondo offer a highly varied typology, bearing witness to their diverse uses and fully participating in the project of “reconstituting an 18th-century artistic residence” so dear to the Count de Camondo.

The 60th International Art Exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, which will be held from April 20th to November 24th 2024 in Venice, is titled Foreigners Everywhere. The exhibition takes its name from a series of artworks made in 2004 by the Claire Fontaine collective, and will be, as the Curator himself explained, “a celebration of the foreign, the distant, the outsider, the queer, as well as the indigenous”. It “will focus on artists who are themselves foreigners, immigrants, expatriates, diasporic, émigrés, exiled, and refugees — especially those who have moved between the Global South and the Global North” (Adriano Pedrosa).

The catalogue, published by Edizioni La Biennale di Venezia, is as always printed in two volumes, and follows the exhibition route to accompany visitors and art lovers through the exhibition spaces of the Giardini and the Arsenale. It also presents the other projects on display in various locations around the city of Venice and at Forte Marghera, in Mestre. Volume I of the catalogue is dedicated to the International Exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. The first pages of the book open with two short introductions by President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and President Roberto Cicutto, followed by an interview with Adriano Pedrosa by Julieta Gonzàlez.
Part one of the book is dedicated to the critical essays and a number of “Conversations”, including interviews with Anna Maria Maiolino and Nil Yalter, Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement of the Biennale Arte 2024, and one with the Claire Fontaine collective. Part two is dedicated to the presentation of the artists on exhibit and is divided into two main sections: Nucleo Storico and Nucleo Contemporaneo. The catalogue includes essays by Jaider Esbell, Kobena Mercer, Luce Delire, Naine Terena, Ranajit Guha, Ticio Escobar and Walter Mignolo. Each artist is introduced by a critical essay that explores their work and is illustrated with a rich iconographic apparatus. The book ends with a detailed listing of the artworks on display.
The National Participations and the Collateral Events participating in the 60th International Art Exhibition are gathered in Volume II, and are presented by texts illustrated with images that explore the works on exhibit in the Pavilions, the Giardini and the Arsenale, and the collateral events located in various venues throughout Venice.
The graphic identity and design of the Biennale Arte 2024 publications is by: Estudio Campo (Paula Tinoco, Roderico Souza, Carolina Aboarrage), San Paolo.

The human hand, flexible, mobile and sensitive, is a fascinating and unique part of nature. Its shape and its practical as well as social function have inspired countless artists throughout history. This book explores representations of the human hand, and the glove as its accessory of choice, in art from the 17th century until today. Richly illustrated, it offers panorama of periods and media such as drawing, printmaking, painting, video, and sculpture that demonstrates the creative and metaphorical power of the human hand as a motif in art.

The essays explore the rich and varied symbolism surrounding hands and gloves, and throw new light at the work of Austrian expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980). For Kokoschka, the topic of human hands was of remarkable importance. Throughout his career, they often appear in the foreground of his works, oversized, in dynamic, active postures and as instruments of expression. They embody Kokoschka’s attention to the human figure, the indisputable backbone of his thought and art.

2024 marks the centenary of the publication of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto, and thus the birth of the Surrealist movement. This French language book celebrates 100 years of Surrealism, combining historical retrospection, interpretation, and the perspective of contemporary artists who explore Surrealist themes and forms in their work. It is based on the Surrealist literary magazine Le Grand Jeu, which was published between 1928 and 1930.

Games to which the Surrealists referred are a core theme of the volume: chess and the “Jeu de Marseille,” a special set of tarot cards created by the Surrealists in the south of France, where many had to flee from German occupation between 1940 and 1944. Alongside, the essays investigate topics such as identity, metamorphosis, esotericism, kabbalah, and magic, as well as speculation, abstraction, and automatism. Moreover, new light is shed on the female members and affiliates of the Surrealist movement, including Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Suzanne Duchamp, Leonor Fini, Gladys Hynes, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning, and others.

The book is also an homage to the never-published fourth issue of Le Grand Jeu, which has been preserved as a maquette and is reproduced here in facsimile images.

The photographic series Banoo by Samaneh Khosravi (b. 1984) addresses the position of women in Iran today. Despite decades of oppression by a male-dominated society, women are steadily gaining ground in science and the world of work. In order to obtain insight into the situation of women in Iran and how they see themselves, the Iranian-German photographer accompanied protagonists from various different social strata and locations in Iran through their everyday lives. The resulting images show women who, contrary to the official government dogma, are an integral part of social life and are already paving the way for a new generation that will continue to stand up for dignity and the right to personal self-determination in the future. The term Banoo is a word used to refer to women that indicates respect and means “lady.”

H2O-scapes by Sylvie Leblanc (b. 1959) are photographic studies of the sky and the water, created between 2009 and 2023 in La Malbaie, Canada. All 57 photographs were taken from the same location and depict the various physical states of the water in and above the Saint Lawrence River. Sometimes the landscape is entirely shrouded in fog without any visible horizon line; sometimes the outlines of islands are visible. Dramatic cloud formations, drifting ice floes or soft waves: Leblanc’s landscape remains the same and yet is presented in a multitude of different ways. Her photographs transform the dynamic play of the water molecules into a moment of stillness — and a space for dreams and contemplation.

Ca’ Pesaro opens the new 2024 exhibition season with a major exhibition dedicated to Armando Testa (1917-1992). Already present since December 2022 in the Venetian civic collections with 17 works, the creative genius from Piedmont will be the focus of a monographic exhibition that will allow people to discover and rediscover previously unseen aspects of his production.

From his Turin beginnings at the Vigliardi Paravia Typographic School and with the teaching of Ezio D’Errico, the exhibition aims to reconstruct the artistic path of a protagonist of visual culture contemporary, creator of famous icons that have entered our collective imagination for years.

His masterpieces are the offspring of a plurality of expressive languages, experimented during his more than 30-year career, whose modernity is today a source of inspiration for contemporary artists and which has led aesthetics scholar Gillo Dorfles to call him a “global visualiser.”

The state of the weather is almost the first topic of conversation when people meet, which is not surprising when it is a matter of such importance to our well being, health, prosperity, and even to life itself.

Accurate weather predictions have always been an important human ambition and one that for some could ensure their success or failure. The result has been the framing of a rough set of rules about the weather. Some of these observations have become proverbs; others have taken the shape of rhymes; while many have been passed down by word of mouth, as mere records of facts.

David Chipperfield’s new building for the Kunsthaus Zürich now stands in all its splendour on Zurich’s Heimplatz, opposite the old museum building of 1910 designed by Karl Moser. Its opening to the public in October 2021 will make the Kunsthaus Zürich Switzerland’s largest art museum.

Following the two previous volumes on Kunsthaus Zürich’s architectural history and the design for turning it into an art museum for the twenty-first century, this book documents the genesis of David Chipperfield’s extension from proposal through political debates about the entire project to completed structure. It features a foreword by David Chipperfield and an essay by Christoph Felger, executive architect for the project at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, that discusses the design concept, the promise made with it, and its fulfilment. A conversation between Christoph Felger, the director of the City of Zurich’s Building Surveyor’s Office Wiebke Rösler, and Kunsthaus Zürich’s director Christoph Becker, and architecture critic Sabine von Fischer, as well as numerous illustrations and plans sound out this new volume.

Much is to be gleaned by the countryman who watches from the hilltop the drifting of the clouds, the descending of mists, the presence of dew, or the coming of rain.

The result has been the framing of a rough set of rules about the weather. In 1922, Léon Bonnat bequeathed to the Louvre a wonderful album of almost forty drawings by one of the most famous painters of the Florentine Renaissance: Baccio della Porta, known as Fra Bartolommeo (1469-1517). The collection traces the career of the artist, who trained in Florence around 1485 with Cosimo Rosselli, but above all in the shadow of the most brilliant workshop of the period, that of Andrea del Verrocchio. Sensitive to the prodigious innovations coming out of this extraordinary environment, which had produced such geniuses as Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Leonardo da Vinci in the previous decade, Baccio, as he was then known, studied above all with Lorenzo di Credi, to whom Verrocchio had entrusted the running of the workshop when he left Florence for Venice. Baccio also closely followed all the great Florentine painters of the last decade of the fifteenth century, in particular the works of foreigners who had been in Florence for several years, especially Pietro Perugino, and those of Ghirlandaio’s workshop, then at the height of their popularity. The two volumes accurately reproduce the almost forty drawings in the Louvre album accompanied by a commentary written by two museum specialists.

Volker Hermes: Hidden Portraits gathers the essential works by one of the most beguiling artists of the present era, in a very modern reinterpretation of historical privilege.

Using only elements of the original paintings, Volker Hermes masterfully alters photos of historical portraits to mask the faces of their subjects. With each figure concealed under their own ceremonial attire, these one-time elites quickly lose their individuality in a plume of decorations and accessories.

In this official collection, Hermes delivers his wry commentary on wealth, fame and social status with taut imagery, intense focus and a suitably shrewd sense of humour. His immaculately reproduced artworks are accompanied by the thoughts of German art historian Till-Holger Borchert and Professor Francesca Raimondi of Berlin’s Institute for Philosophy, as well as the artist himself.

A must-have revision of classical portraiture from a celebrated digital creator.

“Hermes’s meticulously described collages pay homage to their sources while gently ribbing the social pretensions and ambitions of the courtly classes.” – Christopher Alessandrini, metmuseum.org

Art of the Cameroon Grasslands unveils the artistic creativity of a region of West Africa through the Weis Collection. With texts by Peter Weis and Bettina von Lintig, and a contribution by Michael Oehrl, the book is a comprehensive overview of Grasslands Art. In contrast to many other African regions, the works of the artists of the ethnic groups that live in the Grasslands are characterised by enormous diversity, dynamism, movement, asymmetry, power, and even unbridled wildness. Other works radiate tranquillity, offering the viewer uncommon visual pleasure and delight. For centuries, kingdoms and rulers in this region competed with each other to create new works of art or perfect inherited styles. These works served cultural, profane, and representational purposes, and they reflected the social and ruling structures of the Grasslands—aspects that the book’s essays and descriptions explore in detail.

A broad spectrum of objects and their uses are reflected in the Weis Collection. It includes everyday objects, works of folk art, ritual, and cult objects such as magic or commemorative figures, masks, posts, palace doors, representational objects, musical instruments, tobacco pipes, and drinking horns. The introduction presents important aspects of the cultural and artistic development of each object’s region of origin, also in the context of European colonization. All are illustrated with numerous field photographs. This is followed by an essay on beaded artworks from the Grasslands, a subject that has been little researched to date. As the Grasslands are embedded in a larger cultural area, objects in the collection from neighbouring ethnic groups are also presented, in many cases shedding light on centuries-old connections and artistic exchanges.

You’ve heard of the “Starchitects.” Now meet the “Marketects.” This monograph spans all twenty-five years of Powers Brown Architecture and evinces why all clients deserve good design.

“Marketecture,” a term coined by Powers Brown Architecture as an antithesis to the “Starchitecture,” is a market-driven strategy for striving for the best design solutions for all clients. Through this bottom-up approach, Powers Brown seeks cutting-edge solutions that elevate a seemingly mundane building type beyond client expectations. Its dedication to working with clients to develop cost-effective, market-driven buildings without sacrificing good design has resulted in a broad range of commercial projects that respond to everyday pragmatics while still exhibiting strong architectural ideas and developing new technologies along the way.

In Powers Brown Architecture: Commodity and Virtue in Architecture, the firm presents a curated collection of work that spans its entire twenty-five years in practice and includes projects not covered in earlier publications. The body of work evinces the disciplined structure of the practice itself over a predominant style or form.

Projects such as Hillel Student Center in Washington, D.C. and the Transit Terminal in Galveston, Texas showcase the firm’s approach to public work. Frank’s International and Seismic Exchange explore the possibilities of corporate architecture to create place as much as to make a statement. Arabella showcases the potential for variety, rather than repetition, in a condominium building, and the Thompson Hotel & Arts Residences in San Antonio navigates pedestrian scale in a twenty-storey tower. POST covers the commitment to resiliency and the future of the planet, while MEDDNet™ transforms urban design tactics into a national-scale disaster relief strategy.

The introduction is by journalist Stephen Sharpe, who has covered Powers Brown’s work for nearly twenty years. An extended essay by principal Jeffrey Brown, FAIA, situates the firm’s position at the conversational threshold of scepticism about “Starchitecure” and the reality of everyday architecture, or “Marketecture.” Architecture professor and author Donna Kacmar, FAIA, interviews Brown to reveal the details behind the firm and its work.

While We Slept is Pete Mauney’s culminating book of a decade spent flipping his sleep schedule to obsessively photograph the firefly population near his home in rural New York State.

Mauney’s masterful images depict accurate representations of time, space, and patterns among the lightning bugs illustrating the magic that occurs while we sleep.

The book is interspersed with reflections by prominent photographers David Hume Kennerly and Tim Davis as well as biophysicist Orit Peleg and Mauney himself, contextualising Mauney’s work and process among the arts and science. Mauney’s in-depth account of his process through Q & A, attempts to bring the reader into his experience of what it takes to capture the ethereal spirit of the firefly and share some of his first-hand observations of what he’s noticed over time.
