A Passing Bell is the culmination of a life’s work. The poem skillfully takes the form of a series of classic Persian ghazals, a style perfected by poets such as Hafiz and Rumi, into a contemporary setting. The ghazal is a lyric poem often compared to the sonnet for its traditional invocation of love, longing and melancholy. Each line of a ghazal has two parts and resembles a couplet. The final line usually contains the poet’s name, but Kane has reworked this tradition, and included his wife’s name in the final line of each ghazal, making her absence ever more present. In 2013 the poet’s wife fell ill to the devastating motor neuron disease ALS, and in 2015 she returned home to Australia to die. A Passing Bell begins at this tragic ending, and traces the poet’s grief, from a time when he is so bewildered by loss he is ‘shocked to be alive’, to his return home, to the house he built for his wife in Australia, to reflect on his life and loss, arriving at a place where ‘there comes a time every day when I travel backwards, as if against the tidal flow of my future’. Kane’s poetry offers luminous sorrow and the glimmering possibility of joy restored.

Between 1400 and 1500 a design revolution in Persia swept away a 2000-year-old tradition of carpet design, replacing abstract geometric patterns with complex floral scrolls dominated by a central medallion derived from the Chinese cloud-collar shape. This revolution represents a major event in world art history, comparable to that which occurred at the same time in Renaissance Italy. It was followed over the next four centuries by a second revolution, during which the principal design elements of the first permeated carpet production at every level throughout Persia and continue to dominate it to this day.

This book features the collector/author’s well-informed views about a careful selection of mainly 19th century knotted pile carpets and flatwoven covers in various techniques from his own extensive collection, which has been built up over a period of more than five decades. Many of the rugs, which are all of the highest graphic and artistic quality, have been acquired without recourse to the open market and are therefore previously unseen and unpublished. Raoul (Mike) Tschebull’s long experience in the genre allows insights that go beyond the conventional wisdom of the traditional antique oriental carpet bazaar. His collecting career began under the aegis of one of the great US collectors of a previous generation, Joseph V. McMullan.

This beautifully illustrated book will include a general introduction to the region, which straddles the present-day border between north-western Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, setting the context for the focused presentation of some 70 examples, each with the author’s comments about design, structure, technique and attribution, providing a matrix within which dating can be considered. In-country field experience colours some of his views, and extracts from his field notes and accompanying images will be included the book.

His photographs are of an old-fashioned beauty and at the same time radically contemporary. Flower by flower Bas Meeuws composes his floral still lifes, but digitally: the basis for Meeuws’ monumental works are digital photographs of individual flowers. They allude to the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century with their sense of luxury and their eye for the ephemeral. Meeuws strikes a chord in the art world with his flower still lifes. He is represented by Dutch, American, Taiwanese and Indian galleries and exhibits from Amsterdam to New Delhi.

“Flowers represent the circle of life for me as well as the short time of real beauty – Carpe Diem”Bas Meeuws.

“Meeuws’ assortment of flowers, seem to emerge yet elapse into their inky black backdrops, reveling in sharpness, flaunting texture, pore and vein.” Newspaper The Hindu.

“Influencers are like a match in a hearth. You can’t get the fire to start without them (unless you can afford to use more drastic methods). But their way of working often remains hidden: as soon as the fire is burning, you no longer see the match.” Like the wood in a hearth, the combined talents within a company form a solid basis for business activity. But this alone is not enough to make a company successful. What every company needs is a plan for finding the influencers who can set its brand alight. Influencers provides decision-makers and marketing executives with a guide for translating an influencer strategy into practice, and allows influencers themselves to discover how to build up sustainable relationships with trendsetting companies. In doing so, Influencers is among the first to clearly map out the often-neglected subject of influencer marketing in Europe.

“Belgian solutions is first of all a title, that became a way of speaking: ‘Look, a Belgian solution.’ It all started with me stopping to take pictures of situations that I later began publishing on Facebook under this title. After some time people were sending me more and more photos, not only from Belgium of course, but from all over the globe, pictures that in very different and individual ways always kept saying: ‘Look, a Belgian solution.’ or simply: ‘Look, a solution.'” David Helbich Not every solution is the answer to the problem. The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started collecting ‘Belgian Solutions’ in 2006. Once he started to share his photos online on Facebook in 2008 (the Belgian Solutions page has over 23,000 fans), the project gathered speed, with contributions by Belgian Solutions spotters all over the world. Luster is publishing the third, updated and improved edition of the original publication.

The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started collecting Belgian Solutions in 2006; he made photos of the peculiar and sometimes hilarious, no-nonsense solutions that he spotted in his daily surroundings. Once he started to share his photos online on Facebook in 2008 (the Belgian Solutions page has over 25,000 fans), the project gathered speed, with contributions by ‘Belgian Solutions’ spotters all over the world. The youngest of the four children, Charles Spencer was the only one to follow his father’s footsteps. In 1914, the year of his father’s death, Charles took control of the flourishing family business. While attending Oxford in 1894, his future path seemed fairly clearly mapped out for him by family tradition. Before graduation, however, he set out on a tour of Europe, like many a well-to-do young man before him. The experience was recorded in a series of notebooks, which lay forgotten in a drawer for years, until they were collected after the author’s death by his daughter Margaret, and were privately printed. The Tuscany that Charles describes is a Tuscany of city-states and belltowers, of good red wine and of country traditions. In his description not a word is mentioned about Leonardo da Vinci, and only the briefest mention is made of Michelangelo; but Piero della Francesca and Caravaggio are lovingly dwelt upon, as are wayside votive tabernacles. Travels in Tuscany presents an everyday Tuscany as seen by a tranquil English traveller and lover of art and fine food.

Britain and Ireland have so much to offer. The Gulf Stream is responsible for the development of many unique natural landscapes, and Britain’s countless natural wonders have one thing in common: the colour green. Whether in Ireland, Scotland, or England, whether on the Shetland Islands or on the Isle of Man – green prevails everywhere. The islands’ vast moors, steep cliffs and gentle hills are not only the habitat of many animals, but also of abundant flora – prospering here in all its diversity. The rich fauna is comprised of birds of prey such as the red kite and the peregrine falcon, while sheep and ponies are found on the mainland, and seals and northern gannets in the coastal regions. UNESCO protected areas and national parks such as Wester Ross and Galloway, Snowdonia and Dartmoor, Copper Coast and Killarney give a glimpse of the unique beauty of the nature of the British Isles.

Nicknamed ‘the French Borromini’, Gilles Marie Oppenord (1672-1742) was born in Paris, the son of a royal cabinet maker. He was a royal pensioneer at the Academie de France in Rome. There he devoted much of his studies to Mannerist and Baroque architecture and ornament and the Louvre’s carnet (acquired in 1972) is a testament to this period of intense study. Only three sketchbooks of this period survive. When he returned to Paris he was trained as an architect by Jules-Hardouin Mansart and he soon became the architect of Philippe II Duke of Orleans, later Regent of France, for whom he decorated and designed the interiors of the Palais Royal. For the reception of the King in 1723, he was entrusted with the restoration and decoration of the Château de Villers Cotterets. Oppenord also carried out important church commissions, among them the completion of the church of Saint Sulpice in Paris. A talented draughtsman, he published two books of his engraved designs.

In 1778 Pierre Henri De Valenciennes, a young landscape painter from Toulouse, found himself in Rome with many other foreign artists intent on studying not only the ancient monuments and the works of the modern masters, but also to encounter Italy’s light and landscape. Contrary to most of his companions, Valenciennes rarely copied ancient or modern works of art, but instead he chose to sketch views of Rome, ‘a mix of antique and of modern, an assemblage of irregularity and symmetry’. The 96 pages of the sketchbook, reproduced in their actual size and accompanied by a commentary, guide us through Rome, from the river port of Ripa Grande to the basilica of St. John Lateran, from the Ponte Salario bridge to the Vatican, from Piazza Barberini to the Villa Borghese and along the banks of the river Tiber. An advocate of en plein air painting, Valenciennes’ sketches use two or three tints of the same colour to trace the landscape of an ideal Rome, and to achieve this goal he did not hesitate to modify or move the surrounding architecture.

Contents: Preface by Xavier Salmon, Director of the Prints and Drawings Department of the Louvre; Introduction; Travel to Italy and meeting with artists; Valenciennes’ Italian Sketchbooks; Description of the organisation of Sketchbook RF 12966; Material Description; Provenance; List of Exhibitions, Bibliography.

This book challenges the conventional idea of what constitutes the physical form of the contemporary city. Observing the absence of extended urban fabrics – the missing urbanism – in the new global cities developed today, it argues that these cities are merely statistical accumulations of density that lack the positive attributes of a genuine urban condition. Cities as urban places cannot be made by individual buildings alone but rather depend on the intertwined combination of an architecture that is bound to the creation of public spaces and streets, and engaged in the structure of urban blocks to form a complex field pattern of interactive solids and voids. Broad in scope, the book explores the nature of the fundamental relationship between architecture and urbanism as one of spatial formation. As an independently designed entity, the city forms the ordering framework in which architecture is partially subordinated to the mutual sustainability of the overall urban fabric. If a new urban architecture is to be an integral constituent of public place making, it must be composed using a radically different paradigm of positive, figurally constructed ‘space’ rather than the indefinite background of ‘anti-space’ as exemplified in the chapter on Mies van der Rohe’s architectural quest for the ineffable modern void. These two different spatial models are explored in depth in the eponymous article, ‘Space and Anti Space,’ first published in the Harvard Architectural Review in 1980, which forms the core of the book and postulates that the underlying attitudes toward spatial formation, at both domestic and urban scales, determine our ability to shape place and human experience. In a series of essays, articles and urban projects extensively illustrated by plans, analytic diagrams, and dramatic images, this book makes a visual and verbal argument for the steps that need to be taken to re-urbanise the city in order to achieve an urbanity consisting of multiple discrete places that depend on the essential concept of contained geometrical space. These spatial ideas are illustrated in this book in three proposals: for Rome, in ‘Roma Interrotta,’ 1979; Paris, the ‘Consultation Internationale pour L’Aménagement du Quartier des Halles,’ 1980; and New York in the ‘World Trade Center Site Innovative Design Study,’ 2002.
