Picasso céramiques
Les techniques du multiple
Picasso never considered ceramics a minor art form and was thus able to explore, through this medium, artistic practices that had preoccupied him since his Cubist years. Ceramics also allowed him to reconnect with ancient and popular traditions, as well as with the iconography and myths of the Mediterranean.
After some experimentation at the beginning of the century, Picasso only devoted himself to ceramics from 1947 onward, in the Madoura studio in Vallauris. The artist then authorised Suzanne and Georges Ramié to create limited-edition reproductions of some of his ceramics, covering his entire production between 1947 and 1971. These editions, which represent a continuation of his output, helped popularise his work.
This catalogue provides some keys to better understanding Picasso’s creative process, his motivations, as well as the creative processes behind his ceramic edition series.
