Weissenhof 6

The German Werkbund’s Weißenhofsiedlung, which was developed and built in 1927 for the exhibition Die Wohnung, is a model estate in Stuttgart and practical example of the Neues Bauen movement, known across the globe. This unique ensemble showcases, side by side, architecture by Peter Behrens, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Hans Scharoun, among others. Originally conceived by the Werkbund to explore the possibilities of affordable and efficient construction, the aim was quickly abandoned in favour of individual creative freedom. This sixth and final volume of the Weißenhof series, published to mark the 100-year anniversary of the estate, illuminates once more the different approaches to the history of the Weißenhofsiedlung. Newly discovered figures uncovered by the research into this highly innovative period are presented, such as the pioneer of wooden construction Konrad Wachsmann, trailblazer of modern kitchen design Erna Meyer, and many designers who worked at the Pausa textile company. In addition, the media’s portrayal of the Weißenhofsiedlung and its continuing impact up to the present day is placed under critical examination.
