This book tells the compelling story of York through the rich and varied collections cared for by York Museums Trust. Drawing on treasures from York Art Gallery, the Yorkshire Museum and York Castle Museum, it reveals how the city has evolved over nearly two thousand years, from its Roman foundations and Viking past to its medieval splendour and modern identity.

Through paintings, archaeological discoveries, everyday objects, decorative arts and social history collections, an engaging narrative brings the people, places and events that have shaped York vividly to life. Rare artefacts and fascinating stories celebrate its origins, centuries of change, unique aspects and the lives of its people. This book offers remarkable insights into the city’s cultural, artistic and historical heritage, while highlighting the important role of York’s museums in preserving these collections for future generations.
