An essential playlist for any Bowie fan David Bowie was the original influencer. For five decades, his songs helped shape the landscape of popular music. But what did he listen to? Which artists, songs and albums did Bowie tune in to throughout his life?

This book, the first of its kind, reveals more than 100 artists that made it onto Bowie’s turntable.

EXHIBITION OF UNSEEN IMAGES FROM STATION TO STATION RECORDING SESSION AT CHEROKEE STUDIOS 1975

Exhibition Preview 16th October 6-8pm

“Towards the end of 1975, after the filming of The Man Who Fell to Earth, Bowie began work on what would become Station to Station. I was there with him, living in a rented house in Bel Air, Hanging
out in Los Angeles and, finding my way into the studio to contribute backing vocals – and, perhaps just as importantly, a little moral support.

The album was recorded at Cherokee Studios and co-produced by Harry Maslin. As the sessions progressed, an extraordinary array of musicians passed through the door. I didn’t think of myself as
a photographer at the time, and I certainly wasn’t documenting the sessions, but on the few occasions when I happened to take my camera with me, I caught a handful of moments.

Looking back now, those photographs feel like fragments of that time – glimpses of people, places and encounters that seemed entirely ordinary then, but which, with the distance of years, have taken
on a rather different quality.” Geoff MacCormack (AKA Warren Peace) 50 years since the albums release, these photographs will be exhibited at Lucy Bell Gallery from the 16h October 2026 – 21st November.

David Bowie: Music Lover is a compelling mix of personal insight and expert commentary, jointly written by Bowie’s lifelong friend, collaborator and listening companion, Geoff MacCormack, and Jerôme Soligny, author of the seminal Rainbowman, who knew Bowie for 25 years. From Classical to Britpop, Electronica to Delta Blues, the book explores Bowie’s eclectic playlist, redolent of the decades he lived through but also of his deep interest in all genres and eras of music. It’s a story that begins with Little Richard on Bowie’s childhood Dansette record player, and ends with Kendrick Lamar, a go-to listen during the recording of Blackstar, released just two days before he died.

An indispensable guide for Bowie fans and all Music Lovers

Geoff MacCormack, AKA Warren Peace, was one of David Bowie’s oldest and closest friends, their relationship dating back to their childhoods’ in Bromley.

Geoff MacCormack joined Bowie’s band as a backing singer following the release of Ziggy Stardust. He stayed by his side through six albums, five tours, one film and numerous adventures.

During this time he recorded with Bowie on five albums – from Aladdin Sane to Station to Station, also co-writing the track Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me on Diamond Dogs, and Turn Blue with Bowie on lggy Pops album Lust for Life.

As Bowie preferred not to fly, he and MacCormack travelled together by boat, train and road. The photographs from these travels explore this period, and give a rare insight into their friendship.

MacCormack said: “Just suppose your Brilliant Pal said: “Will you join my band [The Spiders from Mars] and come on a tour? And would you mind awfully if we travelled [first class] by sea to New York, and then sailed from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Canada, Hawaii and on to Japan? And then, from Japan to Siberia, through Russia [Trans-Siberian Express] to Moscow [for May Day Parade], Poland, East  and West Germany, just in time for tea at the George V Hotel in Paris? Followed by a relaxing holiday in Rome, just to chill out?

“And then, just suppose, when you thought all the fun had finished, your Brilliant Pal said: “Would you mind being a dog [Diamond], and coming back to New York on an even better ship, eating caviar every day and joining another band, then another band, helping out on a few albums [six], and generally hanging out and having the time of your life for a couple more years?”

Supposing all that happened … Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have kept a photo or two?”
