Invitation to Daniel Buren “Plantations”: site-specific works, 2026 / Collections

In the summer of 2026, the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny invited Daniel Buren to create an installation within its spaces. The renown of this contemporary French artist, born in 1938, extends far beyond France. He uses his signature visual tool—alternating white and colored vertical stripes, 8.7 cm wide—to reveal and emphasize locations and their context in site -specific works . Installed throughout the world in public spaces (from the guerrilla posters of the late 1960s to major public commissions) and in art venues, museums, and galleries, his works play with perspective, color, space, light, and movement.

With Plantations , a site-specific installation , Daniel Buren presents a unique creation that extends from the gardens to the museum’s interior, creating a dialogue between the Giverny environment and the works in the collection. A century after Claude Monet’s death, the artist extends certain fundamental intuitions of the Impressionist painters, who were interested in the changing effects of color and light in nature. But where Monet and Caillebotte painted the shimmering of water, landscapes, or the sky, Buren inscribes his works in the very space we inhabit, making perception a fluid and ever-renewed phenomenon. Scattered throughout the Giverny landscape, his Plantations create vast perspectives of color—tinted with blue, yellow, black, red, and purple—that blend into the verdant setting of the hill and gardens, and extend into the galleries. Within the galleries, the exhibition of a selection of works from the museum’s collection is displayed alongside the work of Buren and invites us to an immersion in nature and artistic creation.
