Daniel Buren

To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death, the musée des impressionnismes Giverny invited Daniel Buren (b. 1938) – one of France’s most internationally celebrated living artists, awarded the Golden Lion at the 1986 Venice Biennale and the 2007 Praemium Imperiale – to create an exhibition across the whole museum grounds. Known for his signature 8.7 cm alternating vertical stripes, deployed in situ worldwide since 1967, Buren has installed around a hundred ‘plantations’: weathervanes striped on one side and solid-coloured on the other, spread from the hillside overlooking the museum to the meadow, gardens, hall and galleries, echoing the landscape Monet painted on his arrival in Giverny.

This book brings the new creation into dialogue with the museum’s collections – Monet, Caillebotte, Bonnard, Hiramatsu – and with Buren’s own earlier work. It gathers photographs by Stéphane Aboudaram, a text by Cyrille Sciama, and an unpublished conversation between Buren, Sylvie Patry and Cyrille Sciama, closing with souvenir photographs of the artist’s interventions from 1975 to 2022.
