Since 1953, the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e. V. has awarded the annual ars viva prize for visual arts to outstanding young artists based in Germany. The award honours work that demonstrates a distinct language of form and an awareness of contemporary issues. This year’s award includes exhibitions at the Rudolf-Scharpf-Galerie of the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen, and at the Belvedere 21 in Vienna, as well as an artist residency on Fogo Island, Canada. The ars viva prize 2024 will be awarded to Atiéna R. Kilfa (b. 1990), Daniel Lie (b. 1988) and caner teker (b. 1994).

About the Author

Atiéna R. Kilfa was born in Paris, France in 1990. She currently lives and works in Berlin. In 2022 she completed her studies in fine arts at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Espace Arlaud, Lausanne, CH (2019), Elvira, Frankfurt, DE (2021) and at Expo Chicago, Chicago, US (2022). She had solo exhibitions at the Cell Project Space, London, GB (2020), at the Liste Art Fair, Basel, CH (2021) and at the KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Berlin, DE (2022), which currently runs until May 28th On display at Camden Arts Centre, London, UK. Daniel Lie, born in 1988 in São Paulo, BR, is trans-nonbinary and lives and works in Berlin. In 2013, Lie completed a degree in fine arts and didactics at São Paulo University in Brazil. This was followed by the Darmasiswa Indonesian Scholarship, a one-year fellowship program for traditional Indonesian dance in 2019. Lie's work has been in group exhibitions at the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, DE (2021), the Berlin Atonal Festival, Berlin, DE (2021), at Sculpture Garden, Geneva Biennal, Geneva, CH (2022) and the Singapore Biennal, SG (2023). Lie's solo exhibitions have been on view at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, DE (2021), KfW Foundation, Frankfurt, DE (2022) and New Museum, New York, US (2022). caner teker was born in Duisburg in 1994, lives and works in Düsseldorf and Berlin. In 2019, teker completed his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a master student. This was followed by two years of postgraduate studies at the SNDO – School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. caner teker has had numerous performances, including: at tanzhaus nrw and Hau – Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin, DE (2021), as part of the Berlin Atonal x Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin, DE (2021), Tanzquartier Wien, AT (2022), Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin, DE ( 2022) and in the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, DE (2022). Teker, among others, received an award with the funding award for young artists in visual arts from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (2017) and the funding prize from the city of Düsseldorf (2020). Teker had scholarships and residencies from the Ministry of Art and Science, North Rhine-Westphalia (2020), the PACT Zollverein, Essen, DE (2022) and for 2023 from the Kunststiftung NRW and the Kunsthalle Bergen in Norway.
