Der dritte Blick
Urs Grunder
- A comprehensive 50-Year Retrospective: This book brings together five decades of Urs Grunder’s artistic practice—from early analogue works to contemporary pieces
- Featuring never-before-seen images from the analogue era alongside new works produced with a wide range of techniques
Urs Grunder takes photography into pictorial spaces that appear familiar but point towards the unknown. He uses photographs he himself has taken, which he then subjects to a multifaceted process involving change after change. Following the first, intuitive glance, a second, reflective contemplation transforms the image into a work that departs from the original. This creates a complex, ambiguous pictorial reality in which the recognisable disintegrates, allowing something new to take shape. The title refers to the “third meaning”—that quiet, intermediate level that is revealed only through repeated viewing. Grunder’s works revolve around perception, reality, and the question of the individual’s place within it. This book brings together works from the last 50 years and provides a retrospective overview of Grunder’s various creative phases. In addition to previously unpublished images from the analog era, it also features new works created using a wide variety of technical methods.
