Gauguin

Leading figure of Post-Impressionism, Paul Gauguin was one of the major artists of the 19th century. As an experienced traveller, he drew inspiration from the landscapes he explored for both his paintings and sculptures. Through his early time with the Impressionists, he discovered the depiction of outdoor scenes, helping to revolutionise the treatment of colour and light. Building on this experience, he developed a colourful aesthetic characterised by rounded forms, transforming the landscapes of Brittany, Southern France, and Polynesia into representations faithful to the sensations and emotions they inspired.
