    Full Description

Leading figure of Post-Impressionism, Paul Gauguin was one of the major artists of the 19th century. As an experienced traveller, he drew inspiration from the landscapes he explored for both his paintings and sculptures. Through his early time with the Impressionists, he discovered the depiction of outdoor scenes, helping to revolutionise the treatment of colour and light. Building on this experience, he developed a colourful aesthetic characterised by rounded forms, transforming the landscapes of Brittany, Southern France, and Polynesia into representations faithful to the sensations and emotions they inspired. Written by Claire Bernardi, Director of the Musée de l’Orangerie and Chief Heritage Curator, this book offers a detailed and thoughtful reading of the artist’s work, providing insight into the uniqueness of both his art and his life.

    About the Author

Claire Bernardi is a French art historian and curator. As a specialist in nineteenth- and twentieth-century painting, she graduated from the École du Louvre and is a former student of the Institut national du patrimoine. After working at the Centre national des arts plastiques from 2009 to 2012, she joined the Musée d’Orsay as curator in charge of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings. In 2022, she was appointed director of the Musée de l’Orangerie by the French Ministry of Culture. As head of the museum, she has developed a program that creates a dialogue between its historic collections, notably Water Lilies by Claude Monet, and contemporary perspectives.
