    Full Description

This book gathers and sheds light on the correspondence between Henri Matisse and Henri Manguin, two major figures of the Fauvist movement and lifelong friends. The project grew out of a wish to preserve, document and publish their exchange of letters, drawn from family archives kept for several decades. Built on previously unpublished archival documents, cross-checked and enriched through research on both artists, the book goes beyond a simple publication of correspondence: it places the letters in their artistic, personal and historical context, richly illustrated throughout. The correspondence spans 1902-1914, a pivotal period in the emergence of Fauvism and the shaping of artistic modernity. The book is the result of more than twenty years of research, archival cross-referencing and editorial work, drawing on the Matisse and Manguin families as well as numerous specialists, including Wanda de Guébriant, a leading expert on Matisse’s work, until her death in 2019.
