This second volume of the catalogue raisonné of Joaquín Sorolla Bastida’s paintings includes 1,028 works, with their corresponding illustrated technical data sheets, which he produced between 1895 and 1903.
The Sorolla of this volume had found his path and was aware of what he wanted, and to achieve it, he faced this new stage with momentum. Anything that might appear as doubt from this moment on would be nothing but experimentation. The only thing he needed at that time, as he himself said, was to gradually let go of fear. Above all, he would continue to train, study, and analyse the great established painters as well as new modern trends. In the final year of this volume, while painting “Sol de la tarde” (“Afternoon Sun”), a large-scale canvas, he considered that he had reached his maturity as a painter. For this reason, the Sorolla we discover in this volume, new to many and broader than we thought, aims to continue to fascinate the public and open up new lines of research and study.
