If ceramics, glass, and metals are inextricably linked to earth and fire, textiles are arguably linked with wind and water. In truth, craft practices are all deeply connected to the elements and to nature. Seven distinguished writers and thinkers living in the Nordic region endeavour to flesh out concepts such as material interaction and material agency, Posthumanism, site-responsiveness, and symbiotic thinking in the field of crafts. How do artists explore the potential of materials and the four natural elements? What does a human-material interaction look like, and how might one approach a material, not from the position of a master but from that of a collaborator?

Features essays by Randi Grov Berger, Nicolas Cheng, Camilla Groth, Jessica Hemmings, Jenni Nurmenniemi, Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir and Nina Wöhlk.

Text in English and Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Icelandic, and Northern Sámi.

Eleanor Moty (b. 1945) from the US is a seminal figure in the field of contemporary international studio jewellery. In a career that has spanned more than 50 years, she has been both a dedicated practitioner and a devoted teacher who has inspired succeeding generations of artists, collectors, and fellow professionals. She began to attract national attention in the late 1960s and early 1970s for her experiments with photoetching and electroforming metal. Later, mid-career, Moty made what seems like an abrupt shift in style and focus, with more abstract works whose designs were inspired by the natural inclusions within the non-precious gems used in their fabrication. While her works have been published in prominent books, catalogues, and journals internationally, this monograph is the first comprehensive in-depth examination of her career from its inception in 1967 through the present day.

The intention of Reinhold Ziegler’s jewellery objects is to move the attention of the wearer or onlooker from themselves onto something greater – a radical strategy within a field that is strongly occupied with emphasising the individuality of the wearer. Ziegler’s art is influenced by the French philosopher Georges Bataille, who in his work Eroticism identifies a strong dilemma in humanity in which, on one hand, we want to fight for our individuality yet, at the same time, have a strong desire to be united with what he calls ‘everything that is’. In this book, Ziegler deals with this topic from many angles – gravitation, vibration, meteorites, fossils, and general aspects of humanity such as tools (from the Stone Age), talismans, spirituality, and consciousness.

Tadema Gallery was founded in 1978 by Sonya and David Newell-Smith in London’s famed Camden Passage in Islington. They were successful photo-journalists who ventured into the field of 20th century abstract art and the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. By 1982 they had discovered a passion for artist-designed jewellery and showed in the gallery an eclectic choice of jewels from significant designers of the Revivalist, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Jugendstil, Art Deco, and Modernist movements. With over 500 unique jewellery pieces from the 1860s to 1960s, the book reflects the 40-year history of the gallery and the superb eye of its inspirational founders.

Stan Allen is an architect and educator who has won global acclaim, primarily for his work in town planning and his influential 1996 essay Field Conditions. His new book Situated Objects shows a unique facet of his creative process: a selection of small buildings and projects on rural sites, most of them situated within the landscape of the Hudson Valley, New York. They demonstrate an approach to architecture that engages in a dialogue with this partly wild and wholly non-urban environment that lies just outside the gates of New York City. The projects are presented in drawings and a rich array of images by celebrated photographer Scott Benedict. They are arranged in three thematic categories: Outbuildings, Material Histories, and New Natures, supplemented by the architect’s writings and essays contributed by Helen Thomas and Jesús Vassallo. The first book on Stan Allen’s buildings, Situated Objects highlights Allen’s personal engagement with American material traditions, the conventions of architectural drawing, and the challenge of building with nature.

The first extensive monograph dedicated to the work of Paolo Ventura (Milan, 1968). Ventura has established himself in the field of artistic photography, offering a singular and absolutely original interpretation of staged photography, an art form in which photography is the final product of a creative process which, in his case, involves the preparation of scenarios and mannequins: the latter, together with real characters among which the artist himself often appears, are the protagonists of his stories.

In these three-dimensional settings Ventura recreates, and then fixes through photography, a mental space that refers to the atmosphere of “magical realism” and to the fairytale flavour of childhood, generating a deliberately surreal contrast with the depth of some topics involved (such as war, abandonment, memory, identity).

The volume offers an overall look at the artist’s 15 years of activity, showcasing 21 series from 2005 to the present time, highlighting the evolution of his language which, in addition to photography, is also expressed through drawings.

The monograph includes critical texts by Walter Guadagnini and Francine Prose, an interview with Ventura by Monica Poggi and biographical notes.

Text in English and Italian.

This monograph presents a thorough overview of the work of the Danish artist Thomas Bang (b. 1938). Essays by four Danish art historians trace his years as a painter in the early 1960s, his subsequent development as a sculptor in the late 1960s, and his activity on the New York art scene through the 1980s. The primary emphasis of the book is on Bang’s three-dimensional work and the analysis of the range of issues on which his object- and installation-oriented work has been focused for several decades.
Thomas Bang has throughout his career focused on various issues of fragility and vulnerability as physical as well as psychological states. The emphasis of his sculpture is on creating a broad field of operations, where alterations of apparent initial intentions and meaning are gradually established in the development of the work.

A remarkable understanding of architectural form and its interplay with nature underscores the creations of Bangkok-based IDIN Architects. This first monograph for the architects illustrates this unique design acumen through constructions that are at once bold and striking, yet one with their surroundings. The firm’s raison d’être is evident in its tagline: “Integrating Design Into Nature.”

These pages present 10 very beautiful and prominent projects spanning residential, commercial, and retail programs, including IDIN’s very own office; each account is highly illustrated in full-colour throughout, accompanied by incisive descriptions, and detailed diagrams and plans. The reader learns how IDIN employs creative reasoning to reveal its inspirations and architectural aesthetics for each project, at times steering away from convention. This methodology in and of itself drives many of the firm’s solutions to site challenges, to arrive at award-winning creations that successfully blend design aspiration with practical function.

Since the mid-1990s, when China allowed its architects to practice independently from government-run design institutes, a new kind of architecture, distinguished by unique regional characteristics, has emerged. China Dialogues is a rigorously selected collection of insightful interviews that the book’s author Vladimir Belogolovsky has conducted with 21 leading Chinese architects during his extensive travels in China. At the time when so many buildings that are being built around the world are no longer rooted in their place and culture, the leading Chinese architects succeeded collectively in producing unique architectural body of work that could not be confused with any other regional school. The interviews are accompanied by over 120 photographs and drawings of beautifully executed projects built throughout China since early 2000s. China Dialogues opens up the thinking process of the country’s top architects, as they share their ideas, insights, intentions, and visions in unusually revealing and candid ways.
