Intended as a comprehensive resource, Increments of Neighborhood is a compendium of recent built work for urban neighbourhoods, encompassing the spectrum of building types financed/built by today’s American real estate industry – from single family and townhouses, through ‘missing middle’ stacked housing, stick-built housing, large multi-family, and high-rise buildings. This publication is the only resource in the marketplace that tabulates market-rate products that fill America’s cities, as well as being a comparative resource that shows how these types can be deployed in a way befitting smart-growth using sustainable principles. The only resource of its type, Increments of Neighborhood will demystify the understanding of costs and type, contribute to the public realm for the non-architectural professional, and provide a breadth and range of significant new information for experienced architects who typically specialise in a particular segment of building products such as hospitals or single-family houses, information with which they are frequently unacquainted.
MASTERcrit was inaugurated in 2015 as a hybrid series of events that encompassed lectures, critiques and a charrette. Modelled on the traditional notion of a ‘Master Class’ the workshop enlisted the best graduating students from the school as nominated by the faculty to work in an intensive pedagogic setting with a world-class practitioner. The so-called invited ‘MASTERcritics’ were MOS in 2015, Andrew Zago in 2016, and Jürgen Mayer H. in 2017. In all cases, these architects were tasked with presenting a project brief to the team, which reflected a current pre-occupation in their own discursive production. Students in turn were asked to produce artefacts that manifested their responses. In addition to documentation of the workshops and resultant work, the book includes the briefs and transcripts of conversations.
Modern to Classic II: Residential Estates by Landry Design Group explores the Los Angeles firm’s recent work, defined by an eclectic range of references and styles. Emphasising the unique stories that inform each of the projects, the monograph’s fifteen chapters – each dedicated to a single completed residence and opening with a conceptual sketch by principal Richard Landry – demystify the process behind creating the grand estates for which the firm has become renowned. From a modern steel and glass eyrie perched above L.A.’s Sunset Boulevard to a lakeside stone villa in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, the houses selected embody the spirit of those who inhabit them. A special section, ‘Works in Progress’, previews 25 current projects from the firm consistently sought for its ability to collaboratively intuit architectural styles, siting and materials in structures that innovatively reflect the area vernacular and elevate the imagination of their clients, who include celebrities, creatives and industry leaders.
Shanghai Tower tells the compelling story of the making of China’s tallest building, the 632-metre-tall centrepiece of the city’s Lujiazui commercial district. This visually driven volume captures the emotion and spirit of a tower that is transformative in nature, setting new precedents for how public spaces can be integrated throughout supertall buildings. In the tower, designed by the Gensler design firm, references to nature and Chinese cultural traditions are fused and recast vertically in a form inspired by the traditional lane houses that are unique to Shanghai. Brief essays by company founder Art Gensler and principals Jun Xia, Xiaomei Lee, and Dan Winey provide meaningful context to the tower, the commission for which was won in an international design competition. An Atlas of Another America is a work of speculative architectural fiction and theoretical analysis of the American single-family house and its native habitat, the suburban metropolis. Mass-marketed and endlessly multiplied, and the definitive symbol of success in America and around the world, the suburban house has also become a global economic calamity and an impending environmental catastrophe. Yet, as both object and idea, it remains largely unexamined from an architectural perspective. This new book fills this gap through projects and essays that reflect upon, critique, and reformulate the equation that binds the house as an object to the American dream as a concept. Adopting tone and format of an historical architectural treatise, it builds upon an eminent lineage of architectural research from Piranesi and Ledoux to Branzi and Koolhaas in which imaginary but not implausible worlds are constructed through drawing in order to reframe reality and reorient the discipline towards new territories of action. An Atlas of Another America is a comprehensive, highly original, and also satirical contribution to an international discourse in architecture.
The new Vienna headquarters of ÖAMTC, Austria’s motorists’ association, emerged out of an interdisciplinary process from choosing a suitable site to completion. Created in close collaboration between the client, architects Pichler & Traupmann, engineers FCP Fritsch, Chiari & Partner, and strategic consultants M.O.O.CON together with Nofrontiere Design agency and SIDE Studio for Information Design, it is a highly innovative structure in terms of design and technology. Moreover, the building sets new standards for corporate culture and working environments.
This new book tells the entire story of the new ÖAMTC complex. It documents the project comprehensively and is lavishly illustrated with images, plans, and diagrams. The essays look at the project’s complex genesis and architectural concept, completed by interviews with the clients, architects, and with users of and visitors to the building. A glance at the history of comparable ‘houses of speed’ and a photo essay on the topic of mobility round out this book on a unique and exemplary multi-functional structure.

Promenades is both a treatise on the relationship between architecture and photography and the first book to focus on the work of the Swiss architectural firm Bauart Architects and Planners. The firm commissioned a variety of photographers working in landscape or architecture to document nine of their projects throughout Switzerland, from houses, schools, and government and office buildings to entirely new neighbourhoods. Each of the photographs represents a personal, wide-angled view of a project, drawing on the rich legacy of nearly two centuries of architectural photography. An essay by Markus Jakob explores the relationship between photography and architecture in the context of the firm’s work over the course of three decades, which carefully accounts for ecology and urban and social context.

Pablo Horváth pursues an architectural direction in which the craftsmanship contrasts with the language of the elegant and trendy design. He has designed a number of remarkable buildings since 1993, among them two idiosyncratic multi-family houses in Chur (2004), and the extension of the school facility in Riom-Parsonz (2006).

Architecture has always been a magnificent and much debated platform to express the spirit of the times, world views, everyday life, and aesthetics. It is a daring materialisation of private and public visions, of applied art and the avant-garde alike. Concrete: Photography and Architecture presents images of iconic urban architectures and townscapes that reflect the close and complex union between photography and architecture, between architect and photographer. Starting from the 19th century, when photography was invented, the book picks up positions, juxtapositions, and thematic fields that bring together the concrete, fundamental, and the historic. Besides everyday architecture and glamorous buildings, it looks also at structural horizontal and vertical axes; houses and homes; utopias, plans and reality; the captivating transience of architecture against the test of time; and destruction both natural and intentional. The Museum of Drawers is the world’s smallest museum of twentieth-century art. This unique piece has been conceived and put together by the Swiss-born artist Herbert Distel in 1970-77. It consists of an old cabinet made to hold reels of sewing silk whose twenty drawers each contain twenty-five compartments. Each of the 500 compartments houses an original miniature work of art, many of which were made especially for the Museum of Drawers. The list of artists represented includes such influential pioneers as Joseph Beuys, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Höch, Meret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Following a first presentation as a work-in-progress at the documenta 5 in Kassel (Germany) in 1972, the Museum of Drawers caused sensation internationally. It has been shown several times in New York, including a presentation at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1999, and at many museums around the world. After its restoration it is now part of the permanent collection of the Kunsthaus, Zürich. This new book is a comprehensive documentation of this extraordinary object. It shows all twenty drawers with their content as well as each of the 500 miniature art works individually and in true size. Essays on the history and importance of the entire work and concept complement the images. The exhibition at Arnolfini Art Center, Bristol, will run from 24 September to 20 November, marking AAC’s 50th anniversary.

When Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec moved to Paris, he soon became a real chronicler of Parisian life. He was a painter who captured the exhilarating society of le demi-monde and its establishments: racecourses, circus tents, theatres and opera houses, cabarets and brothels that became his ateliers.
In only ten years, up to his death in 1901, he produced 368 prints and litograph posters, which he considered of equal importance to his paintings and drawings. When Toulouse-Lautrec started to experiment with lithography, his contemporaries, well-known artists like Alfons Mucha and Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen did so as well, and they too succeeded in creating true masterpieces. During their lifetimes, and because of their work, lithographs and posters were elevated from the status of mere mass advertising media to an accepted artistic genre.

“The well-judged employment of classical detail in a new home has an additional significance that cannot be underestimated. It is an expression of an informed personal choice and an evocation of the delight in the human senses. This is true of all the houses featured in this book.” Jeremy Musson
“The architects and craftsmen that Phillip has featured in this wonderful book all have a love for classical detail. The art is alive and well, as can be attested to in these pages.” David Easton
In The Art of Classical Details, Phillip James Dodd takes a close-up look at some of the finest examples of contemporary classical architecture. The book consists of two chapters: The Essays and The Projects. Starting with a foreword by renowned decorator David Easton, The Essays are written by some of today’s most sought after architects, scholars and craftsmen. Accompanied by sumptuous full page photographs and renderings that illustrate a use of fine materials, intricate detailing, and superb artisanship, these insightful texts are essential reading for anyone with an interest in the theory, practice and craft of classical design. The Projects presents an illustrated look at 25 of today’s finest classically-designed homes. Employing the theories prescribed in the writings of the first chapter, this portfolio of contemporary buildings exhibits the work of some of the most recognisable and celebrated architects in Great Britain and the United States. The work featured in within this book demonstrates the timeless beauty of classicism, and delights in the role that superbly crafted details play in creating art.
The buildings of the past were constructed with readily available and local materials, such as stone, wood, or handmade bricks. Architects in the modern era, however, can choose from an ever increasing number of new materials, each one allowing for different advances in design. And yet the traditional materials have never been entirely supplanted; they still form an important part of the architectural range and are still used by architects the world over. The humble brick, for example, has remained a constant throughout the history of architecture, as has timber with its flexibility and warm tones. But today such elements can be used in conjunction with newer materials to highlight their natural beauty in many different ways: creating a stunning metal facade, wrapping a building with a cool, sleek stone finish, designing a wall with an eye-catching interesting texture, or adding depth or warmth to an internal design. Traditional metals are also finding new use, being employed to coat a structure in a light metal skin that reflects the sunlight, or embedded onto a building to add interest and texture. This book journeys through a curated selection of stunning examples from across the world, showcasing how each material is creatively used over a diverse range of building types and styles, and illustrating the myriad possibilities and forms available to the modern architect who chooses to rework these age-old materials into a brand-new decorative yet functional form.

Furniture by Architects features an eclectic range of extraordinary and eye-catching furniture designs by leading contemporary architects. Following the tradition of great masters such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, these top architects and designers have extended their talents to create beautiful and unusual furniture pieces and collections for the rapidly growing and increasingly global market for designer furniture. The furniture pieces showcased in this book include tables, chairs, sofas, benches, cabinets, shelving and lighting fixtures as well as some unique one-off pieces. The featured styles range from futuristic to classical, and geometric to organic, covering the full spectrum of contemporary furniture design. Materials used range from state-of-the-art plastics and the best quality timber to found objects and recycled metals. The book explores why, historically, so many iconic furniture pieces have been designed by architects. Think of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair and the now ubiquitous Eames Lounge and Ottoman. Essentially, the same fundamental principles used for designing extraordinary buildings can be applied at a much smaller scale to create outstanding pieces of furniture, which embrace form and function to become highly collectable objects of art. Furniture by Architects will appeal to collectors and creators of designer and custom furniture, as well as architects, interior designers and everyone with an interest in high-quality design.
Crown moldings or cabinetry? Vintage or Victorian? Orange or ocher? Successful interior design – creative, comfortable rooms with a personal touch – is built from layer upon layer of colour, texture, pattern, embellishment, and more. But the plethora of choices available in the early twenty-first century has made it almost impossible to assemble these layers thoughtfully. Prominent decorator and author Penny Drue Baird is here to help with On Interior Design, an incisive exploration of the essential aspects of contemporary interiors. Baird considers architectural details, furniture, colour, fabric, flooring, lighting, and accessories, offering equal servings of expertise, history, and recommendation. She illustrates her topics with dozens of photographs of her own work, from apartments in New York City to houses in the Hamptons and Palm Beach to a residence in Paris. Building on her three previous books, in On Interior Design Baird imparts the lessons and principles gleaned from her thirty-plus years in practice.
