Cloud Formation

Founded by film producer George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles is devoted to the past, present, and future of visual storytelling. Its sculptural building, designed by Ma Yansong of architecture firm MAD, appears to hover above the landscape: a monumental, fluid form whose shape invites the imagination. The building arches over a grand central plaza, while gardens, terraces, and winding paths designed by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, extend across and around it, weaving architecture and nature into a continuous experience.

In Cloud Formation, Frances Anderton tells the story of how this singular vision became reality and traces the ideas that shaped it: narrative, emotion, worldbuilding, technology, and the desire to create a museum unlike any other. New photography by Iwan Baan captures the completed museum as both an architectural and a civic triumph coming to life. Drawings and archival images reveal the design, engineering, craft, and experimentation behind its seemingly effortless form.

Cloud Formation is more than a portrait of a building. It explores an extraordinary museum conceived as an immersive world where architecture, nature, art, and storytelling come together as a continuous experience.
