The Corbella company, ‘the first Italian manufacturer of jewellery and weapons for the theatre’, was founded in the heart of Milan in 1865. Through reproductions of weapons, jewels and accessories, it soon became one of the first official suppliers of the Teatro alla Scala, as well as signing contracts with prestigious institutions including La Fenice di Venezia, the Costanzi in Rome and the Colón of Buenos Aires. The industrious Milan after the Unification of Italy, of the National and International Expositions, of the years between the two world wars and of the economic boom has seen the owners of Corbella always acting as protagonists, first in the theatrical sector, with specific supplies to the great lyrical interpreters, from Margherita Carosio to Renata Tebaldi, then in the field of the great Italian producers of costume jewellery, up to the production changes due to the globalisation of the 21st century.

This book, dedicated to the history of design from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, is committed to drawing guidelines for the development of this discipline, offering a synthetic vision of the subject and, at the same time, highlighting elements for future investigations.
If it’s true that the history of artefacts and objects has always accompanied that of man, punctuated by turns occurring with the acquisition of technological innovations, it is in the mid-nineteenth century that we can retrace historically the professional figure of the designer, thus marking the birth of modern and contemporary design.
The subject is branched and composite, embracing many disciplines: in addition to the field of furniture – which often exemplifies the broadest lines of design research in an excellent way – other sectors are considered here, from technical objects to graphics, from fashion to car design. Particular attention is reserved for the influence of the art world, with all its array of thought references that has constantly permeated the birth of design projects.
Ewa-Mari Johansson’s work is endowed with a sort of internal coherence that appears as stages of a single dialectic path without a real beginning or a definite end. But it has developed in a circular manner – often returning to investigate the same field, but each time with a different and heightened critical and aesthetic awareness. Text in English and Italian.
Italian photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri is renowned for his work in the field of fashion and for his sensitivity towards beauty. He had the chance to travel a lot, shooting unique places and extraordinary people, along with his greatest passion: flowers. Over the years he gathered an exceptional collection of photographs, only partially exhibited on some occasions. Very few know about the personal life of Gian Paolo, who decided to keep it to himself. A chapter in his private sphere regards his relationship with Evar, a young architect and model from Bergamo who was killed in a motorcycle accident 24 years ago. Flowers of My Life tells their love story through the pictures of flowers and the portraits of Evar captured by Barbieri’s lens, together with poems written by Branislav Jankic.

Its ambition is to bring together the most innovative artists and help them raise their international profile. Each year, the Marcel Duchamp Prize is awarded to one of four artists, either French or living in France, all of them working in the field of the plastic and visual arts. Since the outset, this collectors’ prize benefits from a close partnership with the Centre Pompidou who invites the four nominated artists for a 3-month group show in its Galerie 4. The winner is chosen by an international jury of collectors and directors of leading institutions. Text in English and French.
The glorious Manifattura Lenci of Turin is the protagonist of this volume, which presents one hundred and fifty works belonging to the Ferrero Collection. Small plastics and decorative sculptures have made the fortune of this historical manufacture, first active in the field of cloths and dolls, for ‘toys in general, furniture, furnishings and children’s clothing’, and subsequently, since 1927, in the ceramic sector. The Lenci production was inspired by the fashion magazines of its time, between customs and bon ton, reflecting the taste of an era and a society, which had identified in its products the bourgeois status symbol. Lenci was characterised over the years by the creative contribution of important artists such as Sandro Vacchetti, Elena Konig Scavini, Marcello Dudovich, Gigi Chessa, Mario Sturani, and Abele Jacopi, who made the ceramic production unique and inimitable. In 1934 Sandro Vacchetti, former artistic director of Lenci manufactory, founded the successful Essevi ceramics, which follows in the footsteps of Lenci and constitutes a continuation of their style.

Traditional country parks, which originated in the United Kingdom, are very different to the country parks we know today. With the development of urbanisation and the improvement of living standards, city dwellers were no longer satisfied with small urban green spaces, and a new style of country park was born. Conveniently located in the outer city suburbs, with tranquil, natural environments, this new type of park met society’s desire to return to nature, and theses spaces have since become hotspots for tourism and leisure. Country Parks includes detailed theory and case studies showcasing outstanding international country park design; analyses and promotes the current status and development of the country park and its role in urban development; and provides valuable guidance for professional designers working in the field today.
